The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Anyone have any natural cold remedies? I've got a fever and my throat is sore. Come on. Help me out ;)
Don't make me eat garlic raw or anything though. All I need is a stomach ache to add to the symptoms

Most successful remedy at our house is a salt water nasal rinse which unclogs the nose, helps with both sinus and chest congestion, and helps prevent sinus infections. 1 cup warm water + 1 tea. salt. Put in a mug, stir to dissolve. Bring mug to your nose and snuff it up your nose. Hard to get used to doing but cuts all that nasty stuff, will help with post-nasal drip cough. You're doing it right when you snuff it up your nose and spit it out your mouth. Gross but it works.

For cough = Little bit of whiskey in a cup + as much sugar as it takes to make a thin syrup. Don't heat it, just keep stirring. When it will thinly cover the spoon, it's right. Take by spoonfuls to help with cough. After a few spoons, you won't really care if you're coughing. [My mother used this on me since age 5 and it does help.]

Gargle with warm water laced with ACV for sore throat.

Hope you feel better!

My kids have been sick and I have been using essential oils to help treat them. Eucalyptus and Lavender mostly, because that is what I have. I need a diffuser. I think it would work better. We also use ivy leaf for coughs. I made a huge pot of chickens soup with lots of garlic and thyme. The thyme will help with the mucous. They are also putting an herbal salve on their chests and feet before bed. I just let the fevers run their course, unless I have a baby who is very lethargic. Then I will treat. I don't ever remember blueberries for fever! We also take elderberry syrup to support the immune system. I may have everyone take a dose of that daily this winter.

BDM, great blog. love all the illustrations too. Those pics at the end, beautiful chickens all but the one with the 2 mamas and chicks

I like that picture too. Karen had those two bantam cochins go broody at the same time and they raised about 15 chicks between them.

I actually left a message to the woman who wrote on your blog BDM. I was asking her about eggs and the possibility of shipping in spring. Good job again!
Karen is great and happens to be one of my best friends. I was lucky to find her when I was first looking to get into chickens and she hatched all my first babies for me. All but her breeders free range her wooded property - of course she keeps her breeders separately so the eggs will be pure. What kind of eggs are you thinking about ordering? Dorking??

Here's mine. Sex link in far left front corner, My heritage BRs lay darker eggs, but at this time of the picture - they weren't laying. The blue eggs are from the EEs. I have some really good blue egg genetics in my EEs. I won the egg contest at our provincial show :D
Forgive me aoxa,, but what does "OEGB" mean.. Been starting at it for a few minutes, and my brain is dead..

ah... I should have known that! All ready for Christmas? I am surely not...35 people to cook for.... AGGGGG!
Ready for Christmas? Nope - but I got the Silkies bathed - LOL!

This one still looks really rough - she's still molting.

This one looks like "Beaker" from the Muppets. She has a bald spot on her head from an amorous rooster at her last place of residence - LOL

Seeing the Muppet made me think of this Christmas video that a friend just sent this to me and I thought it was cute so I wanted to share it with all of you. The kids and grandchildren will think its cute!

Merry Christmas! Thank you for all the wonderful information on this thread!

If you've been pouring it down him for a week he has to be feeling better, or pretty saturated. Also white lightening with honey heated and drank will help. [I have a friend who swears by it}
He only needs the toddy at night, when he lays down and starts coughing. but, yes, he is feeling better!
If I catch the symptoms right at the beginning, I pump him full of echinacea, and that usually nips it in the bud. But he didn't really complain about it until it was good and rooted in. Now, all I can do is give vitamin C and treat the symptoms.
