The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

So I kicked my broody Gooshie out of the nest this morning .... She is my ameraucanas that was running around clucking & fighting for days before she went broody .... Well she hasn't left the nest since so today I booted her .... She didn't care .... she sat in the run all puff up and laughed at me. I finally got her to move when I put some mealworms by her

Is funny, most people on here want MORE land and I'm trying to convince my husband that we could downsize and still be happy. He's not buy'n it and wants 5-10 acres.

For me personally, 10 acres would be enough. It'd give me room for 2-3 chicken coops (for clan breeding or diff breeds), a barn for goats/kidding, enough pasture for the goats/birds, & an area for a good house for a LGD. The rest of the area would be permaculture - food forest, berry bushes & some rinky-dink raised beds for 'show'.

Any more land than that and I'd need hirelings. Bleh.

What's your ideal, Ashdoes? Adding in livestock you want.

Lol, one acre. We have 2.5 and I feel over-whelmed. I made him fence just an acre for the backyard, and I'll be filling it with trees and berry bushes, lots of chickens and maybe a couple goats. I love the look of over grown and filled in, and that's easier in smaller spaces. I won't get my way though, we'll pay this off by military retirement and rent it out while we move to a bigger piece of property....because if you go to war, I basically say yes to anything you ask for. :p

Nearly 100 more comments! Trying to catch up. :)

Leah I think you were looking for a recipe on LABs. I don't make it myself, but I'd like to learn. I found this one http://www.luntiancorner.com/farming/labs/
Thanks for that link on the LABs. That states it straight forward. (Although the measurements leave a lot to be desired

but at least it's a quick overview to get the idea.)

Now...is "rice wash" just the discarded water from rinsing the rice? I looked that up and that's what I seem to be finding. But it seems that some wash rice a zillion times...so which rinse is it? All of them? And...does it have to be the starch from the rice wash? Seems like it could be from any grain.

I'd love even one full acre, but w/ military transfers you gotta work with what you can find. I feel kinda sad that in my area we've heavy restrictions on chickens, even on AG land. But nothing on quail (yet) - although I will stay involved with my community to make sure quails stay in a positive light.

Best of luck w/ growing out a food forest. The goats will love it, for sure. They'll keep the floor fairly free of problem brushes & you can leave thorny bushes like raspberries to grow 'wild' without concern. :)

I'm terrible with explaining via text as I'm a very visual, hands-on type of person. So I looked up a vid for you that has both talking & video:

40-min slower/explanation vid - Korean LABS recipe:

Korean food is fantastic, btw. Kimchi is my favorite and it is basically a spicy garlic saurkraut. I def recommend it. EASY as heck to make.

Yep...that video has been posted several times...but I've never watched it all the way to the end. Seems like I'm always in a hurry

Maybe I'll get all the way through it some time!
