The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Hi all. I have been lurking while catching up on the three threads. Have learned so much and want to thank you all for the info. I am now planning a roughly square 1200 ft paddock and would like to know what would be good small bushes or trees to plant in it.

Thank you, Kassaundra, for that link to the BYC caponize post. Through the next few years I'll be keeping quail & may look into that for an alternative way to keep roos other than just processing (esp if one boy turns into a family pet). Later down the road I'll be keeping chickens & will definitely be referring back to that post.

I think, for practice it might be good if I try it on a recently culled bird, strapped down but just pretending they're sedated. It would let me work with a fresh body & not worry if I make any slip-ups. Kinda reminds me of nurses who practice drawing blood with needles on store-bought, dressed chicken carcasses.; human-like veins without the worry of causing bruising or screams. XD
Most people do practice on a dead bird first.

Honey suckle, Mulberry trees, Grapevines, Texas Lilac.

I would plant them right outside the run/area you fence. Some will grow up the wire and over the coop(Grapevine, Honey suckle). The Trees are good for shade and fruit treats! Lilac can be grown inside as long as it is protected when it is young.

Stony I will be setting the Sumatra eggs in two days. I went a head and candled today. I have 3 good eggs remaining. Nothing went wrong with my incubator I really think it was the shipping.
that stinks! I just got an email form an egg customer in FLA and 6 of the 7 eggs that I shipped them are developing. With shipped eggs you just never know what they are going to be put through.

Quiet around here.

Where could everybody be??
Trying to keep my birds cool around here - we are breaking heat records over the next few days here in Northern AZ! 105 right now... eating lots of popsicles.

Does straw work with the deep litter method? And is DL refer to the run or the coup or both?
I used straw at first, but found it to get too heavy and sometimes smelly when it got too wet - switched to pine shavings and that is working out great. I think it goes farther for the money too - get big packages at my local feed store.

Guess what everyone! I'm pregnant #7 here we go... Baseball team! Hopefully this one will be a girl... I'm severely out numbered here! Yup 6 boys! I really need a vacation...
Congrats!!! I would have had a few more if I could have - I enjoyed pregnancy and babies!

Typed in Natural chickens and found this thread! I haven't been able to read all posts yet so forgive me if I ask something that has already been answered. I can't seem to find any great GMO and soy free chicken feed that doesn't cost an arm and a leg! Does anyone know where I can find some, reasonably priced? Would I be better off making it myself? If so, what is a good recipe for 40 3-14 week old chicks?
I pay the arm and a leg...LOL. Check for local organic feed co-ops. I buy mine through Azure because the closest feed co-op is 2 hours away. Even though it's cheaper, it would end up costing me about the same for the drive. I think the least expensive is making your own but I just don't have the time. There's lots of good recipes around on here and on the internet...

Delisha named some good ones! I planted grape vines on the outside of my run to provide shade, tasty treats when the grapes fall, and it looks pretty! I also have a peach tree that had died and came back. Since it won't ever produce, it's just a bush and I built my duck pen around it. The ducks love to pick at the leaves but it gets too tall for them to do any damage and it provides lots of thick shade. I just keep it trimmed to keep it from outgrowing the pen. You could grow just about anything as long as you protect it until it's well established.
