The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I'm not getting tired of it. I just have no clue. My guess would be mutt on the last one you showed, because it looks way too soft in the colouring to be a SFH, and I have never seen any other crested breed that looks like that.

Possibly a SFH cross, but she does not look pure by any means. I've never had one that round at that age - mine are very athletically built - long and lean. Also, there should be more white on a SFH... the white tends to be very pronounced and not muted.

thank you all for the thoughts. The woman that supplied the eggs said they were first generation from ghf. But, since the woman who hatched for me really mixed up what she gave me.... I keep trying to be patient and wait it out, and also am trying to convince myself that it is ok if they aren't what I expected, but dang!

Jockeyba, can't wait to find out what yours turn out to be.

I have to say Edie the EE is quite amusing with me. She loves to talk to me and come up to me. She won't let me touch her but I am ok with it. It's just fun to listen to her talk and tilt her head as she does. And George well no more crowing and the big girls still intimidate him but I swear his feet and shanks have doubled in size. I can just sit there and watch him walk with his big feet. I hope he grows into them........he still walks like they are shoes that are to big

Speaking of conversing with our chickens, Bob has taken up a new hobby: getting the roosters to talk to him. For a man who didn't want me to have any ("they're too noisy and mean"), he has certainly come a long way. The other night when I came home, he followed me out to the coop (unusual) and said, "Watch this!" He buck-buck-bagawed at the Silkie cock, who instantly repeated it back to him. Later he went out to the other runs with me, where the Fayoumis did the same thing. The Fayoumi boys are happy to crow about anything, and I've been waiting for him to tell me they should go because they're too noisy, and here he was encouraging them to crow! He likes how male they look too, which again amazes me.

I'll take it :)

Me either, they are so raggedy looking but already look a little bit healthier :fl I'm keeping them quarantined in that cage in a horse stall for a while.

i have been thinking about the mystery chicks all day. they don't match anything i raise, but they do somewhat resemble my b.b. red old English bantams. it appears their comb is rose or pea, and i think their legs are yellow?. is it possible they are partridge wyandottes? i have never raised this breed.

I raise dottes and I have never hatched or raises any that had that body style

dotte chicks are round and fat like little balls with a head and legs sticking out

And on a happy note I bagged 16 bags of grass clippings today. 1 bag a month means 4 months of grass clippings for the winter. I put holes in the sides of the bags and they are drying nicely. They are in the little coop to protect them fom the rain. And I figured out a large kitchen garbage bag fits perfectly in the grass clipping collector tote. Med baggi it so much easier & me less itchy

. Even put a few tote fulls in the big coop and all the chickens had fun digging thru the clippings

Nice to hear about your grass clippings! After I raked up ours and spread them in the garage to dry (we've had nothing but rain for the last week), DH mowed into long rows for me when I told him I was supplementing my shavings with the clippings. I gotta talk money with this man!

Dumped a huge pile in our run, hoping to help with all the moisture. The girls have been scratching & pecking having a grand time.

Thought I would share some photos I took of the flock today.

Lucky little mottled houdan. This guy half drowned and survived, Then was found in Henrys mouth with feathers all around him but hes still kicking. Hopefully hell learn to be a bit more cautious... XD. This is the one where I came online here cursing my kiddy pool as another houdan had died. Well he survived against all odds.
You have beautiful birds. So pleased your houdan made it, she sure is pretty.
The colours in your photo's are so vivid, they look stunning
