The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

On to chickens please..

Snapped a pic the other day of a chick I hatched from an egg that I received from a friend who has Orpingtons. I had them in my car all day while I unloaded two trailers of hay with a bunch of people. I had 4 eggs and hatched out two.

Those tooth pick legs say pullet

Has anyone had hens roost in a barn or shed where there are items stored? Am wondering if there is anyway of keeping the darned chicks from roosting on top of random stuff on the top shelves and knocking it all down. I' 'm guessing the chicks are going to win this one, but thought maybe someone had solved this.

Yes, and the solution was to make sure they didn't get in the storage shed any more, or move the stuff they were knocking over/pooping on.

:)

You should see my quarantine pen. My DH threw one up for me and it is horrible. The chickens get out so easy and poop on every thing. I used to scrub it clean daily and finally gave up. For some reason he felt a chicken could not fly over a 5 foot door. He has been around chickens long enough but for some reason he thought they needed more room to fly up high...we have a 7 foot fence to keep preds out at night and they fly over that.

What is that tool you guys were talking about previously to use on bumblefoot? A friend is about to do bumblefoot surgery tomorrow, and I wanted to pass that info along :)
Biopsy punch. They come in different sizes. I think the large one is best unless the spot is small. I think I purchased sizes 3 mm & 4mm (sorry not home to look)

Biopsy Punches in various sizes (4mm, 6mm, 8mm). Got these when I had the bumble foot and just got some extra to keep in the kit.

I got them from this place. I like the 6mm best, but also got a variety of sizes since they're so cheap

Here's a quote from my prior experience:

well, I felt sure y'all were going to have some nice and easy solution for me - I'ld stick one of those rolling on the floor thingies here but they seem to have vanished. site is acting a little weird for me tonight.

delisha, that toothpick chick is adorable - and as soon as you said "toothpick legs" made you think it was a girl, I thought of my straggly mystery chick - she must be a girl because she is toothpick legged too!
