The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Rosie is growing fast :love
Whew! My head is spinning! I was so behind reading and there was so much information to sort through. aoxa - Where did I miss us getting a new puppy? Very cute! So sorry to read about your loss and Congrats on the wedding. (Is it proper to say all that in one sentence?) As always everyone, thanks for sharing pictures. I always enjoy them whether I comment or not. 40 degrees here tonight. I built another woodstove fire before bedtime. Arthritis doesn't like waking up in a cold damp house. I miss my turkeys but love not having to step over their large poop on the deck. The chickens are contented with not having to run from the large birds. It looks like I'll have a couple new chicks soon. Not sure what they'll be as "mom" is a Silkie mix and "dad" must have been a traveling salesman as I'm not quite sure what's been going on when I'm working. I thought the eggs were duds but 3 had chicks in them. Have a great week end.

I didn't get a puppy. Chloe my miniature poodle has a litter of seven. I am keeping one of them :) Rosie.

Susan actually told me the day before Koda passed, at our Wedding Shower. She knows how much I love small dogs - because you can snuggle them easily without being smothered or covered in drool (Henry).

I have coop news! My husband started my second chick house today! It will be unlike most chick houses most people imagine. This will be used mainly for Silkies.

I am a model builder and specialize in 1:25 scale. This little tudor building I built two years ago is the inspiration for the new chick house. Lot's of ideas floating in my head for it.

Exciting!! And way cute!

I won't sell chicks because I'm trying to build my stock up into superior flocks. This is my first year with these strains. (HRIR and top tier Silkies) I will keep all chicks for evaluation before letting any go. When I sell eggs, it will be from my top breeding pens. It's the reason I'm hatching everything I can as soon as I can. I need to know which are my top type and SOP birds and how they reproduce before I offer them to the public.
Ah Ha...I knew there had to be a reason for that. Helps me think things through if I ever decide to sell birds in the future.

OMG!!! I think it's finally going to work!!! I've been trying for days to get these pictures to upload .... Anyways this is my silkie Spook. She has always been a very reserved bird. Her idea of free ranging was to walk up the hill and stand under a bush and pose... She is so perfect she almost looks fake. Well I don't know what happened but all of a sudden she is a forager!!! She figured out that she can squeeze under this pallet in the yard and dig goodies that the big girls can't reach. This is her new and improved daily look!! I think her pouf was so big she couldn't see a thing... Now with it yet a dirty.... Look out she's a terror!!!

This is what she used to look like .... But as you can see she was just starting to get dirty.
