The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

armorfirelady, glad Edie is back home! Years ago I had a chicken who kept escaping a fenced yard, turned out she was terrified of squirrels, and she would panic and fly anywhere, and then in true chicken tradition, never could figure out how to fly back in the yard.

good luck!

Glad you found her AFL!

Lala - have things settled down around there any? Did that Brinsea come?

the brinsea did come! I can't wait to use it next spring, I am hoping to be able to afford some sulmtaler chicks or eggs - I know someone who can hatch them for me (NOT the same person that mixed everything up).

I got home after dark, and all seemed quiet in the coop except for one of the older hens hiding halfway on a roost.

Keeping my fingers crossed that the boys have worked it out - I leave for the weekend tomorrow and would hate to come home to a bloodied rooster. I don't know if it will escalate or not.

I miss Mrs. Murphy! I didn't do a necropsy (heartbreak + bitter cold = excuse not to) but am not too sure I would recognize a problem yet. I am probably going to get meaties next spring and should learn alot more from butchering them.

ok just a heads up... I'm headed for 2 shows in the next month. the VPBA will be at the caroline county fairgrounds north of Richmond VA, and the TVPC show (also ABA nationals) in Knoxville tn...

I've got a variety of chicks I can bring with me, if someone is interested, but they will be staying here otherwise.
a few SFH (possibly a few of leigh's extras), 1 black laced bantam blrw cockerel, a pair of mille fleur bantam cochin chicks (the pullet is split mille but will produce nicely marked chicks). I've also got an ee cross pullet that should mature large bantam or small LF... momma is LF EE, sire is red bantam cochin. yeah he got lucky. LOL as well as a silver grey dorking girl or 2... (mature, going on 2 years old).

pm me if you want more info...

great news..next week fire up the incubator and make winter meaties..the eggs will get really large pretty quickly.

take them out of the bags in the run..the birds will spread them out for you and help dry..great score..after a few days..put them in the coop.
Can't.. I swore I wouldn't touch the incubator until January.. Plus I saw a Naked Neck rooster mate her, and he has leghorn in him. Actually is not more than 3 pounds full grown. Would be a terrible cross! lol!

But I do have a few broodies who are sitting on duds. I could replace them.

Brinsea had delivered the EcoGlow to the winner of my contest within 2 days! It was crazy! Very awesome company!!

You need an incubator. You have a boy to fertilize the eggs, so it makes sense. You need it.
