The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Good post. And I agree...
-I don't like the idea of getting her wet at this time of year unless you know it's necessary.

-I also have a bird that looks like she's going to die when she molts. Just 1. That's why I asked if she might be molting. Never realized that some of them look so bad at that time since only one of mine acts that way.

-And...it can be hard to know what you're dealing with. Very frustrating.

Drat. Ice frost crystals inside the coop when I came home last night. Probably because I left the chicken door closed a few days, even though there are windows open. Or possibly because there are too many chickens pooping insde for days on end

. frozen bedding does diddlysquat for absorbing moisture, and of course, there is no composting going on in the dl.

I didn't open it up last night because of weasels but I did crank open the windows more to compensate. Although it is 35 to 45 below windchills today, I think the air temp is only down to -10 or something. Not sure if the frost crystals will go away even if the air is dryer, because....aren't they frozen to the windows? don't they have to melt to be absorbed by the air?

Get to work from home, so am giving the chickens a warm gruel of oatmeal, grits, wheat germ, leftover crushed walnuts from cookie baking, cracked frozen eggs, and meat drippings. Aren't you glad I'm not cooking for you?

Poor booster looks awful with the frozen comb (way past frostbit now).

done with winter now and it hasn't started!

Quote: if you have a syringe with a needle attached, that makes it much easier... no more red faces from trying to blow a golfball thru a hose. LOL

use the needle to poke a hole on both ends of the egg (make it a bit bigger than the needle on the large end to make it easier for everything to come out) then using the syringe, fill it with air and put the needle in the hole all the way to the base and gently push the air into the egg. doing it too fast will cause the egg to crack, but if you go slow the guts will blow out the other side. catch them in a bowl and scramble for breakfast.

Just a thought as I was reading your post but could you use the syringe the other way and suck the egg up inside it rather than blowing it out using the needle. I know nothing about egg blowing but the question popped in my mind so it had to be asked :P

you could but only if you have a very large needle, egg whites and the membranes are very thick and would be too hard for most needles unless you have like a 10 gauge or larger.
