The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

@lalaland

Did you get the result of your necropsy?
No! I know it takes a week and a half to two weeks to get the full written report, but I am trying to reach the vet, Dr. Porter, to see if he knows yet and whether they did culture tests or just visually diagnosed. Been reading alot about the path reports, turns out some places (Purdue gets lots of complaints ) will stop at visual and not do the cellular confirmation. Will post when I know.

So far, everyone is looking ok except for the molters who are miserable. If it is mareks, and my gut says it is, I will probably lose a chicken every 3-4 weeks.

And I cannot find any turkey litter! I'm not getting any responses - I've tried craigslist, the twin cities chicken listserve, the minnesota thread....geesh. I am about ready to ask someone to ship me a feedbag of it.

Yep...Purdue would be the one where I am and it's really frustrating that they don't really test. Hear of "false positives" naming Marek's is quite common all over the place.

I'm looking into getting a meat grinder. For those of you that grind up you own meat, which one do you recommend? We have a breeder set of turkeys and I hope to raise turkeys for meat next spring. Turkey burgers go over well here.

I use this for deer:

I've been using it for years, it cleans up really easily, there's nothing about it I don't like. Someday I might upgrade to the #32 version so I can bolt it to a table.

ack!! called the u path lab and spoke to the dr. He started telling me it wasn't mareks and then realized he was thinking of the wrong bird. Results from histo something or other not in yet. He said they look at the tissues under a microscope and that is what they are waiting on the results. I can hardly stand the waiting. I brought him in last thursday.

There are 4Hers all over the country. I suspect there are probably some somewhat close to where you live. Contact your County Agriculture to find out the closest groups close to you. From there you can find out who heads up the poultry and then who has some turkeys.
