The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

This may have been addressed before in here. I don't know.
Do eggs get broken sometimes inside the hen? last night, one of the roos tried to mate with one of the game hens while they were on the roost. She feel off, so did he. The roost is 7' up I think.
Anyway, this morning, one of the game hens had a string of mucus hanging from her backside. I couldn't tell which hen it was. Just now, when I went out to gather eggs, one nest box had yolk and white in it, but no shell. I'm not sure what might have happened. 2 of the game hens went right to that nest box while I was out there, and pecked around for the egg. I ended up cleaning it all out with a wet rag.
Any ideas? TIA

Oh I tried a pomagrate today for the hens. Had a coupon :). Seems they like them as well[/quote]

We gave ours pomegranates two and they gobbled them up! Went over very well here.

Good morning everyone! (well it's still half an hour til the afternoon anyway :) )

I have 4 22 week old ladies who are keeping me on pins and needles waiting for their first eggs! I feel like a Mama waiting on those last few days before birth :p

I took these this weekend, do you think they look like they're approaching POL to you? They do to me, with the combs and wattles lengthening and reddening up and the faces getting redder, but I bow to experienced chicken keepers:

Haw

Georgia

Rose

Sunny

I had to add this one with Rose photobombing Belle :)

Sunny and Georgia look real close from those pics. Love it when you get the photo bombs, mine constantly do it.

Thank you! I thought those two were the closest! My birthday is in a couple weeks, maybe I'll have an egg from one of them for the day! :D

Hopefully,

. I have a feeling my 18 week old GSL is going to lay her first when we are in Hawaii for next 8 days. She is close and my rooster started mating her a couple of days ago.

Hi Guys! This one of my favorite threads, so much information, very helpful. I think I've got a silly question for you guys-here it goes!

I have just started getting my feet wet with selling hatching eggs, going pretty good so far. I was wondering what you all thought of my going about its. I sell them for $5.00 a dozen and I offer shipping too, which I tack on the final price. I also offer mine for just eating, which are $2.00 a dozen.

I have production reds-layers. They are mixes with in those breeds, they all lay beautiful perfect eggs. I know over 98% are fertile-I've checked. I also have 2 cochin banties, 4 olive eggers, 2 gold laced polish hens. The roosters are black copper marans, and a Basque. I am also looking into setting up a website to let people see what I have and order from there. I plan on selling chicks later in the spring/summer time. So any suggestions would be wonderful! I really want to set myself up the right way and also be competitive and fair. Please be honest, I want to learn how to do it right the first time.

Please I need more thoughts about my little bantam with the possibly impacted crop. She broke her broodiness after only two days. (she has never done that) she is not eating. Her crop is much softer than last night but still very full. But now she is sleepy. she was just sitting in front of the water bowl and fell asleep! I have separated her into a small cage in the garage. she was coughing or sneezing a bit when I put her in there. I left to go get a bowl of water and found this on the floor. She either coughed it up or pooped it. Neither one is good.

I have given her a bowl of water with a little ACV in it. I am off to the store now to get some olive oil to squirt down her throat. What else should I be doing??????
