The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

sandsbmom, I'm sorry, I don't have any suggestions. Your hen is very sick if she is lethargic.

It could be something that you can't fix - tumors, etc, totally unrelated to her crop.

Culling might be best for her, you can watch and wait and see.

ok so you set up a website with weebly for free. can you offer from that website what you have for sale, and can you take payments, orders? i want to use paypal for payment of what the person has bought. i am excited about all the possibilities that i am hoping this will open up for us..thanks shawn!

Yes, but I believe that would be a "Pro" type setup which costs. I currently have that.

You must take pictures! Her farm is amazing!

Wish I could go with you :p
I had to google the address of her place. It is about a four hour drive from Seattle in the foothills of Mt. Helens. Waaayyyy off the beaten path.
The web site pictures of the farm are breath taking. This time of year there is likely snow on the ground. Her farm is situated in spectacular country.

I wish you could go with too! I'm afraid I'll get so excited when I see her flock my mind will go numb! You would be the voice and I would be the blinking, hyperventilating, numbskull. Hah!

Going to ask the hubby tonight if we can make a weekend of it and stay in Portland over night before heading back to the island. Hopefully with a couple dozen eggs. Or a pair of drop dead gorgeous dream Whites.

Please I need more thoughts about my little bantam with the possibly impacted crop. She broke her broodiness after only two days. (she has never done that) she is not eating. Her crop is much softer than last night but still very full. But now she is sleepy. she was just sitting in front of the water bowl and fell asleep! I have separated her into a small cage in the garage. she was coughing or sneezing a bit when I put her in there. I left to go get a bowl of water and found this on the floor. She either coughed it up or pooped it. Neither one is good.

I have given her a bowl of water with a little ACV in it. I am off to the store now to get some olive oil to squirt down her throat. What else should I be doing??????
Also mix in some mollases. It is a natural laxative to the birds. I mixed equal parts EVOO and mollases, and put about a teaspoon down into her crop with a dropper. If she gets things moving give her a second dose a couple of hours later.
Quote: Woah, Catdance is closer to me than you then. OOOOHHHH, That is good info for when I need to add new blood. I could just drive up to pick up.

It's true Trav! You live near by one of the premier breeders of Silkies in the USA. I almost fell of my chair when I looked up her address! Holy Carp! Sure glad my husband finished building the new breeding pen over the weekend. This time next year I'll have a full barn of dream birds!
Ooopps...Better not count my chickens before I've got them! Hah!

Yeah, me too. I am starting the pallet coops for everyone in Feb.. 8'x10 for the LF and 40"x80" for the Silkies with 40"x40" breeding coops split down the middle with runs attached to them. So I can have 2 breeding pens. One will be BBS, we haven't decided on the other pen color, maybe Partridge/Buff/Porcelain. The two bigger coops will have protected LARGE runs for when they can't be out free ranging. Silkies will get the carport cover to keep them dry. My wife can't wait til we get back from Hawaii so she can start bathing the Silkies.

We eat almost any egg ourselves. Cracked, dirty, frozen. Since we collect them at least once a day, I know they aren't "old" and risk bacteria. It it's 100 degrees outside and I haven't collected for a full day, I might not for a variety of reasons. But normally, chow down. (They're great for homemade ice cream)

Stony, I loved your article. Very informative. I have 4 broodies right now in nests about 18-24 in off the coop floor and now I'll leave them. When the pullets first started laying some dropped the egg down to the floor from the roost. With so much bedding (litter) it must have bounced because it didn't break. Can you help again with ways to break a broody hen? Mama hatches 4 times a year? That thought causes me to break out in hives. I shouldn't have hatched so many and let nature take place. I'll be standing out in the road saying, "Congratulations, you're the 10th person to drive by since 5pm. Here, have a chick, 25th person, here have a chick." lol Eggs I collected last week. I got one smaller than a marble. So cute! Even turkey eggs look pretty.

The speckled egg's are from the Royal Palm turkey. She laid 5 in a row and hasn't now for several days. I broke them open to scramble and guess what? THEY WERE FERTILE! I'm so glad hubby and I aren't. I must be on fertile ground! Cat's, Dogs, Chickens and now Turkeys. I still only have 3 goldfish.
I see anyone who was wondering, was pm'd about Stonys great article. Every single article has been more informative than anything I've read. I hope someday that I'll have that same wisdom to pass along to others like you all have to me. Thanks.
BMD, thanks again for your creativity. I'm still copying.
It's 17 here right now but due to get very cold for the next several days. DH is a vol firefighter and when temps dip like this there are so many chimney fires. Makes me nervous. Be safe everyone. Sue

It's been twenty some years since I used my old bantam breeding condos. We had reused most of the pens for storage over the years. All I was going to do was have Johnny. Then Johnny needed a few hens...Then I attended the WFF Winter Brisk and brought home Silkie eggs from Sheryl Butler and a Gray pair from M Best. It's been going off the charts since then! Since finding out I can go to Catdance Silkie farm and pick up eggs or birds my mind is all a skitter!
Took a ferry into Everett today and stopped by the PetSmart. Picked up a bottle of nice smelling kitty shampoo to start bathing mine as well! It's madness I tell you!
I'll be selling all the offspring I've got cooking in the bator right now. Most likely will sell the Bantam RIR chicks too. I'm on a wait list for HRIR eggs and chicks for March. Turkeys are in next month. All this going on and all I can think about is bathing Silkies. Hah!

I'll be following your progress on the pallet coop. Have a great time in Hawaii. Hubby and I are going for the 39th anniversary coming up. Our favorite place in the world.
