The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

This may have been addressed before in here. I don't know.
Do eggs get broken sometimes inside the hen? last night, one of the roos tried to mate with one of the game hens while they were on the roost. She feel off, so did he. The roost is 7' up I think.
Anyway, this morning, one of the game hens had a string of mucus hanging from her backside. I couldn't tell which hen it was. Just now, when I went out to gather eggs, one nest box had yolk and white in it, but no shell. I'm not sure what might have happened. 2 of the game hens went right to that nest box while I was out there, and pecked around for the egg. I ended up cleaning it all out with a wet rag.
Any ideas? TIA

I didn't see anyone address this question. While I don't have all the answers, I do know that eggs can break inside a hen... and if this is the case, you do need to try to help the rest of that eggshell out so it doesn't injure her further. I know that it can help to put olive oil or a lubricant like KY jelly into the vent before trying to extract the shell.

I am hoping someone with some first-hand experience with this can weigh in... I'm just passing on what I've read elsewhere and I haven't dealt with this myself.

thanks! I don't understand "don't need more chickens"? Is that Latin? I see the words but they don't make sense to me.....

It's chicken Latin! I would love more, but really don't need more.

Ok guys...I'm taking the plunge, i need an incubator. We're going to be be getting rid of the Cochins this summer and switching to Cream Legbars, since they do everything we're looking for. So, suggest a good incubator for beginners, with a turner, under two hundred for sure hopefully under one fifty. And from what ive read in the Colorado forum still air is no good here...whatever that means. Thanks!

. Seriously though, I know someone will help. I just use LG's with a turner when I incubate.

There have recently been more than a few emergency/health questions on this thread that sound serious. I only comment or offer advice if I have first hand knowledge of the malady. And as with the recent case of Splay leg that wasn't splay leg, I was wrong in my 'online' diagnosis. To offer serious medical advice for the treatment of a bird that is unseen and and for unknown causes seems beyond risky to me. I feel bad for our readers that are going through these difficulties but I do not feel qualified to give out remedies that may just prolong a birds suffering.
After 36 hours and there is no sign of relief, it is time to cull. The hardest decision to make. I am truly sorry to not have an answer.

I have vitually no experience with emergency / health problems. I just rarely have them. Same reason I don't respond. I can't even offer a time limit online as for what I would do, not being there with the bird I just can't. Perhaps these questions should also be posted in the emergency section of the forum. I really wish I could help, I just can't.

Evrytime I'm in the barn I tell the ladies it sure would be nice if they could sit on some eggs for me...they haven't taken the hint. I have one Silkie girl, and four Cochins.
