The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I like the idea of remedies and recipes on a separate but linked thread. I'm sure we'll end up with a pretty huge collection, since there are so many people contributing to the natural chicken keeping.

I like the idea....IF they are recipes that the person has USED and knows works. Not just random recipes found on the web. But tried and true recipes. Anything short of that would not be helpful and if anything can do damage. I see it on all of the really popular FB chicken sites. They are always posting bad information on those sites. We do not want  to be like that ;)

Good point.

Also keep in mind to make sure you are getting REAL essential oil. Some places sell diluted oils which are proccessed and the properties are weak. If anyone doesnt know this is how you tell if it is a true essential oil, all the different oils will be different price. If lavender and white pine are the same price they are not pure. Hope that helps

More super information - I would never have known this! Please be sure to post this on the Natural Remedies thread!

Good thinking, Stony! I'm going to add this requirement to the other thread.

I am very happy to see this thread (and now realize that I really need to read the Road thread). I have always preferred natural remedies. My chickens get ACV or probiotics in their water. Right now I am adding some garlic to the feed as I just lost a perfectly healthy looking girl yesterday for no apparent reason. I figure garlic is so good for so many ailments, may as well try some :)

Maybe even go so far as to ask the poster to list the symptoms...what they think the disease, sickness etc is. then list the recipe and treatment regiment and the results after how many days of treatment.

chickens sometimes just die for no known reason. It happens to the best of us.Hearts give out etc just like in people. No amount of good husbandry can stop this. Sometimes chickens just die

I remember something abut the lavender from the other thread... Didn't Bee say she put lavender in the coop and a hen was having a reaction with it? Or was it a few hens? I can't remember if it was fresh lavender she had just cut, or if it was dried.

Does anyone remember what happened there? I don't know if I want to sift through the thread to find it. I have no idea how far into the gnarly bunch story it was.

I'm simply humbled to be asked to do a blog post. This is my busiest time of year so it will have to wait a lil bit.

For those of you who know of my Pekins, they seem well today. One girl was doing what I call the "funky duck". Tomorrow they will at the very least spend the day in their pen next to the runners. As  soon as I see fit, they will all move in together. My Pekin girls need to get out in General population and move and groove as ducks do to heal faster. Of show me that they won't. Either way, they need to get out and do their thing.
    I have bloviated enough :D

Glad to hear it, I was wondering how they were doing today. Not sure what the funky duck is, but sounds good! and glad you are here, too.

OK - Here's a start. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/729825/all-natural-herbal-remedies-and-recipes-for-chickens
I don't know much about this (but I'm eager to learn) so please start posting. Discussions should be welcome as to the effectiveness of certain ingredients. Looking forward to seeing what is contributed!!

Totally got the giggles thinking of Lucy stuffing the chocolates into her mouth when she couldn't keep up with the conveyer belt!
I loved that show.. hilarious.
