The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Can we make a new rule where we don't bring all this Bee drama here?

Her choice.

End of story. I'm not going to sit here and cry about it. There are plenty of people here that want to learn about raising their birds without pushing antibiotics and medicated feed.

Pretty sure a good % of us will cull a bird that needs culling.
Delisha just discussed that with her naked(ish) bird a few pages ago. Even though she was still laying.

Stony is here to give Bee's no-nonsense tone. I respect him for that.

I back Leigh (BDM) up 100% on this.

Please no more talk about Bee and how it's a shame she is not here. I'm so tired of hearing it.

its bake a pumpkin day for the chickens for me. And since i get to be home, its a day when I get to shoo the chickens out of the coop into daylight and fresh air. and, best of all, I actually get to see them in daylight, instead of flashlight.

now, I'm gonna take my cup of coffee and read the link about horrible diseases as forewarned is forearmed. Or something like that

I am sure enjoying the pics!

The measure of intelligence is the ability to apply knowledge. We have been given a sound basic knowledge, combined with experience, and that experience comes with time, and trial and error balanced with good basics. The posts on biosecurity/sick chickens fit right in there well, "new situations" to apply what we know to along with the experience of those who have had to deal with it first hand. There may not always be a blaze of new post topics, but that's a good sign that many are applying what we know and leaves room for new folks, of like mind, to seek clarification and confidence. Well done, carry on. Now, I need to figure out what we have laying around that can be repurposed to make a better FF feeder than what I have.Off to the attic and sheds.

lalaland.....I"m down in southern mn. We are getting ready for a winter storm, so the sound of pumkin baking and watching TV sounds so good to me right now. Have a great day

Okay...do they eat the pumpkin pretty well when you bake it? I have TONS of pumpkins I got for the "kiddos" and they still don't seem particularly excited about them. I really want them to eat it raw after the freezing and thawing like we were told about. Maybe I'll try again!

They'll eat it eventually.

Especially if you don't give them any other treats for the day. Once one starts eating it, they all join in.

My sheep love pumpkins!

This place will be a place where you can look at what you are doing with a critical eye and implement ways you personally feel will work better for you. This place will not serve up ways and push it down peoples throats. It will give options
Lets take Cedar for example..this is a personal preference..someone wants to line walls with cedar..that is fine

We all know we are not suppose to use it. It can be toxic for the birds. Chickens have sensitive respiratory systems and the fumes alone can be harmful.
Personally I would not recommend people use cedar to line chickens walls to prevent bugs in the coop.
Have you ever looked at your walls in your coop? Right about beak level, and around nest boxes?
Chickens like to peck at things, even the walls...

I have found with my flock that they will eat the raw defrosted pumpkin, maybe not in 2 seconds like they do with fresh, but they do eat it down to a paper thin skin ...just takes them longer. They seem to eat what they are given, eventually. I still have some watermelon slices in the freezer and one they were given last week is gone, including the skin (or at least I sure can't see it).
