The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Well...I'm one that uses either organic or non-gmo feed. I also NEVER feed soy in any form as it is not an item that a chicken would eat if it had a choice. Soy is not useable by - and in fact is dangerous to - chickens unless it is roasted - and even then it is not a healthy alternative for many reasons.

I've just chosen to aim for the most natural husbandry for their health and mine as a consumer of their eggs and meat.

Well said.

Yet another question...

Am I correct when I assume, that putting some dirt (from our yard where they will eventually free range) in with the chicks (at about 2 weeks of age) that it will help them build up immunities against cocci?

I'm not using medicated feed, I'll be FF with non-medicated crumbles, U-ACV, oregano and garlic (I'm hoping the pumpkin seed powder as well) from day one.
Thank you!

I got it to work...thank you..:)

Adding soil or a dirt mound to the brooder does help chicks with building up immunities and cocci issues they might have once they hit the ground.
