Sphinx or Hummingbird Moth cocoon - we found them here several years ago and had the same startled reaction![]()
Exactly they are all hornworm moths(There's a few out there) Nice big moths. The hornworms make great feeders lol(Only the domesticated type that isnt feeding on tomatoes as the tomato plant is toxic IF I remember correctly). I know people have breed a domesticated type of hornworm and its the same kind of chrysalis
I actually have thrown the tomato hornworms to my layers and they gobbled them up with no ill effects.
