The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Too cute!!

I think I killed all of my birds..

I am just sick..they have been acting off for two days and I attributed it to me not fermenting with the change in weather... I bought a new bag of crumbles and was going to feed that out through all of the storms. ..I had several downed adult healthy birds this morning and all of them are acting off..several dead chicks...the bag of feed is full of mold..I am doing molasses and hoping I can save some of them..but I think its too late..almost 50 lbs of poison I gave them..

Oh no, how awful! I'm so sorry, delisha, what a nightmare.

Delisha -
I am heart sick, and I am praying like crazy that you are able to save most of your birds!

I am a long-time follower of this thread and I feel like I know you and know your birds.

Huge, BIG hugs and tons and tons of prayers coming to your beautiful flock.

I've been searching the web also. This link gives different kinds of mold but last one was the one that caught my attention. If you read the treatment it says LABs are good. I'm not good at LAB info but I was thinking the one made naturally by FF or the one made by rice wash? Leah's mom would be better at it than me.......

Another tx option:

Lots of good info there.

Oh Delisha I hope you can save the rest.

I grew up eating squirrel, turtle, pheasant, but the worst thing was groundhog (woodchuck to you northerner.). Greasy and gamey. Squirrel meat is actually very tasty (like chicken, LOL) but I drew the line when it came to cracking the skulls to eat the brains.

Sorry to hear about your chickens Delisha. I'm hoping the rest recover quickly.

Delisha, I found a little info on aflatoxin poisoning and aspergillosis in the msucares site. Some sites say to treat with activated charcoal, but other sites say there is no treatment, except to give high protein, high fat diet, with extra vitamins and probiotics. Recovery takes up to 3 weeks, and there can be similar symptoms like a respiratory disease with gasping and loss of voice, even swollen eyes. I sure do hope they can make it.
