The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

For whoever was needing to get rid of rats, try a Rat Zapper (google it, I had no luck trying to paste a link here). It runs on batteries and is very effective, just follow the directions precisely.

Always wondered if those would hurt the ears of the chickens.

ETA: Whoops...looks like you're talking about the traps rather than the electronic thingies :D Is this the one you've used? http://www.amazon.com/Rat-Zapper-RZ...TF8&qid=1389203711&sr=8-1&keywords=rat+zapper

Yes that's the type of Rat Zapper I have (mine is the Ultra, but basically the same), it is a chamber that becomes electrified (by batteries) when a rat or mouse enters it. I've found it to be quite effective (in the course of a week I got 11 mice and 2 rats). Might seem a little pricey, but honestly, how much time and money have you wasted on other methods that obviously haven't worked. It's portable, reusuable, non-poisonous, and it WORKS... fits the bill for me.

I wish it could kill more than 1 a night. I have seen signs of mice in our small coop and we caught 1 in a standard trap. But something like this would be great since I would not need to see the mouse.

It will kill them as fast as you empty the trap. On mine, a light flashes on top when there's been a kill. If I pay attention to the trap and empty it as soon as I notice a kill, it's ready to zap the next one. I got mice all through the daytime hours. Though I only got rats overnight, I imagine they move around in daylight hours too (there are just WAY more mice than rats around here). They even sell a remote flashing light alert (called a "rat tail") so you can still see the light flashing even if you have to locate the actual trap in an inconvenient place.
