Kids, dogs, SO's...never know who was needing an outlet or bumped a cord.Arrrgh.... I just noticed my turner had stopped... and it was unplugged... have no clue how that happened!!!
<3My Meyer shipment of 70+ chicks came this morning & got added to the 9 "little" babies still running around my big brooder in the "chick room."And THIS is what's in the little brooder in my bedroom right now, born Monday.
Guess I won't be putting any chicks in there for a while.
That's ok though. I have chicks in 5 more brooder/cages in the basement for a total of around 150 +/- chicks 6 weeks or younger right now. Anyone need any chickies![]()

Roos tend to "get around" better than you think. I had 1 Silkie roo for 12 hens & we switched him between 3 pens rotating every 1-2 days. EVERY egg that came out of those pens was fertile & all started but 1, & that's even counting the 2 batches I shipped out. That was over 25 eggs we checked over about 3 weeks, plus the kids ate some when the layers were slacking. I swore over half of them would be infertile, but Blue was obviously a very busy, very happy boy.what do you do with all those chickies?? now that i can hatch eggs from my own hens and i bought a GQF I'm afraid of creating a monster....!!
I'll be transferring these eggs to the GQF today or tomorrow and retiring the LG... then adding about 36 more for a staggered hatch...these will be mutts
that i am hatching to a) test the incubator b) to see how my Rooster is doing and c) just because I can. I really am not sure what i will do with the
chicks though? The roo has 11 hens and 2 pullets so the number of clears might be quite high.

As for the chickies, I'm in the middle of farm country & have my babies listed on craigslist & FB. I actually have trouble holding onto the chicks I want to grow out for myself, plus everyone wants laying hens so I'm trying to grow a few out to about 10-15 weeks so I can get a good bit more out of them. Right now I only have about 4-5 that I have managed to keep more than 4 weeks that aren't planned to go into my own coop. Everyone wants chickens & ducks around here. The 1st batch of ducks is set for Easter hatch.
Adult roos are a completely different story when it comes to finding homes for them. I usually end up eating them or taking them to the swap meet. The 1 swap I do meets 3 times per year & there are always a whole bunch of Asian ladies who come around looking for every "cheap" bird they can find. I know I can always get $5-7 out of each roo there if I don't get them sold before the swaps come around.Haha... well my roo is probably a happy camper too. I have another one who is on his own right now but i am not sure what will happen with the dynamics if i swap places
with them, i currently only have one coop with mature hens so both guys can't go in there at the same time... I've had a white roo on craigslist for 3 weeks for free and no takers!! I live in a farming community too but pretty much they are only interested in growing palm trees, tomatoes or strawberries... or maybe horses.. this will be my first try at selling chicks so i'm not sure what will happen...
good luck with them!!!
BTW there is a person who advertizes silkies in Davie but that's 50 miles north of me....
