The NEW Crazy 24hr AUCTION thread

Quote: I bought Araucanas that grew tails. He still insists they are Araucanas.

What really drives me crazy is the use of the word RARE. I don't think people know the definition. Every other post for a chickens or eggs says rare on Ebay. If your Barred Rock rooster snuck into your RIR hens coop late one night, that is not a rare breed. It's a barnyard mix. Since when is a buff or lavender orpington rare? A Ayam Cemani is rare. A Isbar is hard to find but not rare. Just because you want your eggs to sound more important, that doesn't make them rare. Sorry, but that is my bonker button. I'm sure you guys on here know what I'm talking about.

The thing that drives my crazy the most is the EE/ameraucana/araucana thing I wont go into to deatil. And the rare thing drives me crazy too! All the time people label polish as rare. Around here you can find them all over, they arent rare. To a lot of people they look really weird but that dosent mean they are rare. And I have seen people saying orps are rare too! I was looking on some website and for one one Lav Orp. pullet it was almost $40.

I agree I see that a lot on ebay and elsewhere. I do have "mutts or barnyard" mixes and we just adore each one of them but I wouldn't be able to pass them off as pure. I know mine aren't "rare" color but we still love them just the same!

If I were to win any chance of you substituing a few of your lavender project eggs for a few of the Ameraucanas if they have started laying again? I know the eggs won't be lavender and no guarantee that the hens hatched will lay lavender but it's fun to watch and wait to see.

Correct me if I'm wrong (Dak, Peeps?) but I believe the the BBS ameraucana is a recognized variety of the black/blue/bbs color pool, but a splash of any other color combo would be unacceptable. this is one of my bbs hens which I plan on showing.

D#$%! But then again if I had the money.....................

I have to say that the rare part mentioned is sort of right... You have to remember that there ARE breeds and varieties out there that are rare. Especially if you are going for quality, the amount of flocks and breeders who breed them. There is a ton of junk out there. Not that the birds don't mean any less to those who own them, but once they are incorrectly bred by so many, the good ones are rare.

I have Silkied AMs. I made the mistake the other day of thinking Jean raised them also. She doesn't and pointed out why. I'm using that to hopefully make sure that the problems with them doesn't happen with my birds. They are fragile. I have to watch them from about 2 months to 5 or 6 months, because they sometimes tend not to thrive. I would say good ones will remain rare. They all stem from one mutant pair and I spent a lot of money per dozen eggs to get the one roo I've had to work with since recently. Mine have been splits, but I just hatched out Silkieds from them to work with, so now I have the feathers to work with and I have nice AMs to breed in to try and make sure I keep them to the SOP for AMs, but with those cool looking feathers. Birds imported from over seas are rare for this country. It's an expensive under taking to have them shipped over and hatch and cull until you have the best quality. There are birds that were bred here to copy what we couldn't get and when they started out, they were rare. BUT! You're right. There's a whole lot of breeds that are not rare that are advertised as rare. Then again, does rare mean much better quality? Polish?? Tolbunts are pretty rare. Still a lot of people trying to get to the quality that so few have, so I would consider those rare. Polish were one of my breeds way back and although my WCBs were not rare, they were sure unique.

Sorry. I showed and bred dogs for decades. I did start out some breeds that were considered rare and were only shown in rare breed shows and matches. Then they'd get popular and someone in a breed club would work to change everything about them so they could be AKC and then everyone and their neighbor would own them. Not the real breed, but what had been changed. I always feel like the ones that are still bred correctly are rare.

It's just the way you look at it, or the amount of work you put into it that makes a difference. Heck.........I'm rare!

Tolbunts I would call rare. But I wasnt meaning them. Buff laced, silver laced, gold laced, white crested blacks- hatcherys try to sell these are rare breeds. I dont think they are rare, I know lots of people that breed them.
