The NEW Crazy 24hr AUCTION thread

you can make a makeshift incubator out of a lot of things.. even an old fish tank and a light bulb

out of the makeshift homemade bators I love my coolerbators the best (they can easily hold 5 dozen eggs).. but a lot of people have used things like toaster ovens and electric skillets... to desk lamps and boxes (though there is a risk of a fire hazard with the box)..

I did not know this! Really? A cooler

Quote: You poor thing! I'm sitting here trying to figure out if we have an incubator I can send you! I'm SO sorry about the dead chicks. I have had a mother do that, but for me it is rare...with so many chickens we have something like 8 to 10 broodies at one time! overall I have very good luck with them. I even give all my "special" eggs to them.

I also separate the broody mothers from everyone...I don't let them pile up like they like to do, since I have had them stomp chicks or eggs trying to keep eggs or get them from another hen.

for me they just seem to sit tight better in a private dark little cave of kennel or cage or something...i keep one end open so they can see...I also go in and take her off the nest every day or so...so she can flap around and go to the bathroom...food and water is within reach I also use practice eggs to see if she is sitting for real or playing house, but doesn't really care about it that much... I have had those and was thankful the eggs weren't ones i wanted or needed...since they are fake! I have three fake ones i use.

Eggs likely to ship Saturday or MOnday.

First bid starts at $10 !
Last bid considered at 10pm tuesday night EST

Quote: Yes, I made my "HEnnyPenny" using a large cooler. Bought a few parts like a fan, bottle lamp repair kit and WHT. With patience and many minor alterations, I hatch more chicks than I need.

Quote: I will make available what ever the SWEETGRASS girls lay this week.

Shipping is $12 if less than 6 eggs; and $16 if 7-12 eggs.

BIN at $2 per egg.

Please note, that an off chick may be possible as a narrigansett tom had an illicit visit with one of the hens. lol Otherwise she lives with the Sweet grass tom.

I wish I had an updated pic of the Tom, his colors are bolder and more vivid as he is approaching his first birhday!!

I am just NOT this talented AT all! I can only make a " rotten egg maker" cause NOTHING is gonna Hatch...EVER. By the time I buy all the parts IF ( and that is toooo funny cause me buying parts is hilarious of its own accord) I could get the sucker even remotely figured out, to assemble it, it would never work...so I would waste more money...I.E. buy an incubator would be MY best bet every day!
I am amazed at all of you that have the talent and were-with-all to be ABLE to build stuff like that...and then to CREATE life with it? stunning...really...

I have a sportsman!!

Well.. the way I look at it is like this..

Lets say you have shipped eggs sitting there going bad because your incubator died.. isn't it better to try to fashion a little homemade incubator with what you have on hand than letting the eggs just go bad?
At least if you attempt to make a bator you might be able to hatch out something... otherwise if the eggs just sit there you won't get anything to hatch at all.

My first incubator was a styrofoam cooler. I used a 75 watt bulb, porcelain mount, hardware cloth bent to form an elevated floor, some foil tape to shield the eggs, a computer fan and a cell phone charger to run the fan. Lastly, i got a hot water heater thermostat for temperature regulation. I drilled vent holes in the side & used plastic medicine bottles for ventilation. I also ran a tube through the wall to a plastic tray for water additions. This worked like a champ for my first time. I now use it as a hatcher. :) Good designs that can be adapted are found here on BYC.
