I had 9 babies this morning when I woke up....and now..ta da!!!!! The 10th one is out of the 10 that went into lock down! All 10 that were viable from the beginning made it. This is the best hatch rate I've had in a long time! They are so pretty. I love the ones that are mostly silver..hoping that at least one of the light ones is a girl. Or are the light ones usually boys? If it's ok, I will post a picture later when they are all fluffed out.Awesome thanks for letting me know the Wyandottes are so cute as chicks!
Nothing against your birds. They are beautiful. But for me I stick to the 2 breeds I have. It's been very hard getting what I want. I know about spending alot on chickens. I've done the same. I just sell eggs to be able to buy their feed and any supplies they need.
My last post wasn't meant to be mean, and I can see were maybe I came off a bit more snarky than I meant. I'm not saying I didn't have a bit of a stern tone mentally as I wrote it though.
I have noticed that many people on BYC don't want to pay anything for eggs. The seller's market is lax on here. It's like almost everyone wants something for nothing. Like the whole $40 for my MFC eggs. Well, when it's all said and done I pay $15+ in shipping and whatever packing materials and Paypal fees. I am lucky if I make $25 off my eggs. They are worth more than that - this has been another labor of love and a lot of travel and $ sunk into it. I am sure the $50 price tag on my blacks may have seemed like a lot to some, but again, after shipping and the packaging (I used 30+ feet of bubble wrap), I made about $30. I'm not saying all the birds you hatch will be SQ, but my stock isn't someone's hobby farm of hatchery quality birds - like many I see on here and on eBay. I did go through a lot to get my birds. I traveled 100's of miles to get them - not to mention the mean breeders who yelled at me and treated me like crap because originally I was looking for eggs (I could not afford to buy and have birds shipped then - not at $50-100 per bird). Since most breeders sell their birds after the show season, we're talking Oct/Nov/Dec - guess what? That's the hardest financial time of the year for us because the OH loses hours. I also don't know of anyone who sells quality (black bantam Cochin) eggs at all here on BYC. Quality being the point. I bought eggs off of a respected BYCer that claimed I was getting SQ/BQ black and mottled b.Cochins. I culled every single chick I hatched - especially the Ameraucana crossed one w/ the beard and white skin. Once things get a bit more situated around here, I won't be offering any eggs for sale for another year or so.
Again, I am not trying to be mean. I do get frustrated over it though. It also stinks that I have had eggs to sell from certain breeds and while everyone else was getting $60-100 for the same eggs I couldn't get $30-40 from - not including shipping... Yes, frustrated may be an understatement.
