Thanks for the reality check. I'm getting out of horses and have the woven fence. But . . . . I was envisioning it as predator control for coyote to protect the chickens. . .simplifying life these days. I"m not adding emus' but I"m sure glad you have them and share the pictures of these amazing creatures.

They really are amazing.. but not a critter for everyone. As for them being predator control.. nope.. at night they are extremely vulnerable.. Paco was attacked one night by a couple of dogs.. luckily he had enough sense to run up to the house where I heard the commotion and went out to see what was going on.. when I found him one of the dogs was hanging onto his neck.. I honestly expected him to be dead by morning.. but all his wounds healed up..leaving just scars behind

these pics were taken a few weeks after the attack:
back of his neck.. this was the widest wound.. a large chunk of flesh was missing so it took the longest to heal

his thigh.. deep punctures here with skin ripped off.. it healed and dried up faster than the first wound I have pictured..

scarring down his neck.. this had been open skin.. luckily they missed his jugular

Have they ever scratched you with the claw on the end of their wing?

nope.. their wings hang down and are useless.. (lol..luckily for me)!

I picked up my eggs from Wolftracks at the post office.

There were two big holes going through the top, like a sabertooth tiger bit it or maybe a walrus.

But I am fairly certain neither of these delivers packages for the post office, I'm going with the post office sucks. There was water inside the bubble wrap with almost all of the eggs. I think they must have left them outside for awhile then brought them into an air conditioned building. None of that matters because they scrambled the eggs.

I don't know how. but everything inside is bubbley and all one color. The membrane is floating. I am so sad.

They are such beautiful large eggs. And she sent extras, too. they were packed so well that not one was cracked. I don't like you mean postal carrier that hates fragile packages. This is worst shape my eggs have shown up in. But Wolftracks got insurance

so I'll get to find out how it works. I just keep thinking of all of those beautiful eggs, wasted. I know there are excellent postal workers out there, it sucks that it only takes one jerk along the way to ruin my package. They are so pretty. Hmmph! Arghg.
I can't find many good breeds around here. I am so frustrated.

I've had a few other packages damaged, but this was ridiculous.

The Austin postal hub is horrible with any package marked "fragile"

this was one that I got a while back.. and it's pretty normal for them

Quote: the guy at the PO yesterday asked me 'not sending any eggs today?' I told him I was, but that your PO tended to scramble things marked fragile and that you said NOT to mark it. so I was just following orders... he just shook his head and sighed. i'm sure he's heard that before.

it's just insane ... the Dallas postal hub is fine.. but the Austin one has a hatred of any box marked fragile.. reports have been filed.. complaints have been made.. it hasn't done a darn bit of good.

I got some eggs shipped to me 2 weeks ago. The package said fragile on every side and perishable on the top. Two sides were smashed in and the postal lady left the box laying out in the sun. She didn't even knock. I candled the eggs and none of them are doing anything. :( They were lavender orphington eggs. I think she did it on purpose because she hates our dog. He barks at her.
