The new (human) baby thread...

Can... I join the "club"? Those are funny stories about the baby meltdowns... If our chicks hatch ok I hope to have some photo opps with my kiddos. I'll just have to make sure the baby doesn't chew on them!

Don't you just love it when babies look at their parents with that "should I be crying about this" expression before they actually start crying over it. Sometimes, not always, but sometimes when Ethan does that I can actually keep him from crying by being goofy and laughing. He seems to forget whatever he was going to cry about and laughs at silly mom instead. Babies... gotta love 'em.

Yeah.... I know it.... Like they aren't really sure how to react so look to the ppl around them for the proper social cue. It really helps them be ok when they get hurt if mom isn't freaking out.... Amazing if you really get to thinking about it.

hey guys! I have decided to check this thread out as I just graduated from the Expectant parent posts. Had my little man 2 weeks ago today, 6lb 2.4oz 18.7inches long after 2 hours of labor.
This is our 1st human baby

and boy do we have a lot to learn.
Here's a photo of my new little man..Shane

when we were still in the hospital

I still have to upload more recent photos, but not too much time for the computer these days. As you all probably know, I should be napping right now. My poor little guy gets colicky in the evening and that can make for one tired mama!

need some advice from some breastfeeding pros....I need to begin to pump and store but don't really know how to go about pumping...like when and how much, will I have trouble pumping and making enough to breastfeed? I got all the storage stuff figured out, but I don't want to become all engorged if I pump at wrong times or pump too much. right now I just want to have some on standby if I need to go somewhere without him and maybe get my DH up in the middle of night a few times

anyone?

Welcome to this thread! Does Shane nurse from one or both breasts at a time? When Wyatt was really tiny and only nursed from one at a time I would just pump on the other side when he was done with the side he was on. Later, when he nursed from both and went longer between feedings, I would either pump right after he nursed (you'll still get milk) or time it to be in between his feedings. I guess it depends on your personal milk production, but I was never short.

Congratulations! What a beautiful boy!

I breastfed all 4 of mine, still breastfeeding my youngest and I used to work for a lactation consultant. In the first few weeks, I would usually pump if I had gotten engorged to make myself comfortable because really full breasts hurts! The LC I used to work for would recommend if you're pumping to relieve engorgement, you pump just enough to make yourself comfortable, but not long enough to completely empty your breasts since you're not trying to increase your milk supply. For me, pumping for about 5 minutes worked.

To stockpile milk, there's a couple of stradegies that worked for me. If Shane is only eating on one side at a time, you can pump the other side. I got good enough with my 2nd and third baby to pump the other side while they were nursing to take advantage of the letdown (I hate losing milk to a nursing pad- lol). But pumping right afterward works, too. Now that my baby usually nurses on both sides each feeding, I usually pump both breasts at the same time for 5-10 minutes after one of his feedings. I seem to have more milk in the mornings than the evenings, so I usually choose to pump after his first nursing of the day.

If you're trying to increase your milk supply, pump for 5-10 minutes after every feeding to increase your supply. I had to do this with my youngest to get my milk up; it was exhausting, but it worked.

Don't stress yourself out over the pumping. The best thing I ever did was learn to nurse laying down in my bed, then baby and I would nap together and he could nurse as long as he wanted - ahhhh bliss!

Welcome, rcenter, he is adorable! And only TWO HOURS of labor with your first baby?

Wow, my shortest labor was about 4 hours with my 3rd baby, and that was after being induced!
