The NFC B-Day Chat Thread

Good morning folks

N F C I love Bobbi, she is such a cutie! I like the name Bobbi also. “Grill Gone Wild” is an awesome name too. I had to Google ‘Hummingbird Cake’ it looks delicious. I am sorry to hear that your hiring woes continue. Are you just having a bad run or can that be the norm there?

sunflour glad to hear that you are increasingly improving; hopefully back to normal soon.

Blooie great telling of the no-lunch story.

J I am pleased your little ones are fighting to survive.

5 weeks ago today hubby left for Forrest Beach. I reckon I have been pretty stoic to date but today for some reason, may be because it is an 'anniversary' day, I am feeling sorry for myself. I do miss him terribly. I shall give myself one of these

and get on with it! Hopefully only 5 or 6 more weeks to go

J, keeping my fingers crossed for the finch babies

I like the name Minnow...that's perfect!
I agree so much! Minnow is perfect - got another one? It can be Guppy! I may steal that Minnow name for one of my grey Silkies...if any of them survive! <sigh>
he.gif
I have never, EVAH had so much trouble with a batch of chicks.

Debby, I forgot to tell you yesterday because I when we left your office I got hung up on the stupid cramp in my arm...you can (and should) turn the heat down in the room the chicks are in - they need a little cool in addition to the warmth of their brooder and if the entire space is too warm they can't regulate their temperatures as well. Of course, with my current track record with this batch of chicks, no reason why you should believe anything I tell ya...... <sigh>

Hi sunflour,

It's so nice to have the brooder right here by my desk and hear the little girls singing (I'd forgotten how they sound as babies). They're eating, drinking, bouncing around, flapping their wings, and scratching up the bedding. There's one I'm keeping an eye on...she eats, drinks & poops but doesn't seem as active. Dr. Blooie recommended Nutri-Drench so as soon as TSC opens, it's back to town I go. Sunflour, you're going to love the Welsummers! Such sweet, calm little chicks. The Legbars and Sapphire are busy
big_smile.png

The almost lunch? First I was going to take her to the one & only restaurant in my little town but it was packed. So we drove to Rawlins. The second place we were going to stop was full up. The third place would have been ok busy-wise but right before our name was called for seating, her husband called to say his meeting was over. Her husband would have been welcome to join us, but Blooie had the car keys, lol. So...almost had lunch
hmm.png
At least B got the 'grand tour'!

The brooder is actually a pre-made rabbit hutch. It wouldn't be that great for a rabbit but it works well for a brooder. And if something happens to one of the girls, I'll be able to use it as an infirmary.

Sis, glad you're feeling some better...that must have been some nasty stuff to hang on like it did. Try not to work too hard!

I thought the brooder might be a rabbit hutch - the viewing from the front is awesome.

Hope the less active one is ok and perks up.

So funny for you two to post the almost lunch a the same time - I enjoyed reading it from both perspectives.

The saga of the "almost" lunch.

Debby met us in Rawlins in front of the Shrine building where Ken and the other Grand Lodge officers were having their meeting. Ken tossed me the car keys because he figured he was supposed to be done around 2 but if I got back too soon I'd at least have the car keys if I wanted to go back out to Debby's and wait or check out some of the shops. He said he'd call me around 1 to let me know how much longer they'd be. We hopped in Debby's car while Ken went inside and she drove me around Rawlins to show me some neat places. Then we headed over for a great visit at the golf course, I got the grand tour with her and Frankenfoot, and then we went over to her house. I met the cat family - Opie is a love but after our initial introduction I didn't see too much of the other guys. Debby gave me my goodie bag - thank you, Debby! - and boxed up two pieces of her Hummingbird cake to send home with us. We sat and talked chicks and chickens and kids and went downstairs to see the brooder and ooh and ahh over the new chicks. (Did you secure that lamp yet, Debby?) We laughed and compared, and shared, and somehow time got away from us and we'd forgotten all about going out for lunch. I didn't know any places to eat there, but I figured she'd guide and I'd buy as a thank you.

So she suggested a little place in Sinclair. Got there and there was a long, long waiting line. Packed inside, some waiting outside. We knew Ken would be calling, so we opted to go into Rawlins and try our luck there. Another little place didn't even have spaces in the parking lot, so we drove past that one. She mentioned a little Chinese place, but after remembering that her eyes swelled up the last time she ate there, we skipped that one too. Finally we ended up at a place called "Bucks." It was busy too, but there was only one couple ahead of us (and several more who came in after us) so she put our name on the list and we sat to wait. They called the folks who were just ahead of us, so we were next. My phone rang. It was Ken and he was done. Totally finished already! Debby said he should come and join us, so I told him where we were. That's when he reminded me that I had the keys. Oh oh.

Well, we drove back to the Shrine and Ken eventually came wandering out of the building with some of the other Grand Lodge officers and their wives. Knowing my Grand Lodge "lady" protocol well, we got out of the car so I could greet my counterparts. Had fun introducing them to Debby, too! Funny, this year's Grand Master's name is Mark. So I introduced him to Debby. Then next year's Grand Master came out and I said, "Hi, Mark." Debby looked at me and said, "Do you call all of 'em Mark?" Only if that's their names, Debby!
wink.png
We never did get lunch!! After a couple of photos and hugs, Debby headed for home. The guys decided they wanted to get lunch and discuss the candidates they'd interviewed. So we all headed back over to Bucks, and by now the wait for a table for 6 was over 30 minutes. Same with someplace called "Cappys" So there was no lunch for Ken and Diane - I don't know if Debby ever did get lunch - but we did eat the Hummingbird cake to hold us over until we got to Riverton! It was delicious, too!!

Edited: Aaand by the time I got my post finished Debby had already covered it.
gig.gif

You should have told him to catch a cab and order Margaritas
wink.png

It sounds like a wonderful day and visit, just wish the ending when you got home was happier.

We never eat out lunch here - everything is packed. Macon has so many restaurants it's hard to believe they fill up.

I got up at 4.30am to feed the babies and was relieved to see them both still alive and kicking. I am using a plastic fork which I've snapped all but one tine off and they suck a drop of formula off the end. One latches on like a little bulldog! That was the smallest, safest thing I could think of to use.

Loved the saga of your almost lunch. And the name of your restaurant sounds perfect. Hope your little chick perks up.
That is genius - a fork tine nipple:)

I think my incubator temp drop toward the end was too hard on my eggs. I have 3 babies that are doing well.
smile.png
One that is strong but had splayed legs and curled feet. So far the splayed legs are doing much better after sitting in a medicine cup. I think his little feet will be okay with a little work. I had 1 die in shell last night. I think its little legs and feet were pretty deformed so I'm okay with the outcome. Poor little fella would have been my first brown
sad.png
I don't see much activity with what is left in the bator. I may float the eggs tonight to check. Now that I know the quirks of the incubator I think my next attempt will turn out much better. I'll give the leftover eggs another day but I think this may be it. I'm trying not to be too sad about it and appreciate the 4 that I do have.
fl.gif
Please be girls!!! Please be girls!!! Please be girls!!!

Sending some luck for you " hope they are all girls"..
fl.gif

I need hatching vibes right now. Of about 18 Serama eggs that went in on the 20th of last month, there are 4 that are pipped and cheeping, 3 or 4 that are rocking, and a couple more that maybe, maybe, maybe.
fl.gif
I have got to stop hovering over that 'bator . . . .
Sending hatch success vibes your way...

DH just dropped in to tell me the latest about our new hires for the club house. He tried to call one of the women that's supposed to be there tomorrow to tell her we're starting at 8am. Her phone has been disconnected, no new number given.

I don't get it. Of the 8 I thought we had hired, we're down to 5 (and 1 of those is very iffy due to her inability to be there every day this past week for 'personal' reasons). We haven't even opened yet for crying out loud!

he.gif

People, they can be a real pain in the .....

Blooie, get that application filled out and sent in asap! We're running out of local people, we might have to start importing 'em.

So sorry about the hiring, seems it is the same every where. I'm worried ( and bet you are too) it may be another season with Debby doing everything.

Good morning folks

Teila, 5 weeks is a long time to miss your hubby. Have a glass of wine, a good cry then pick up again tomorrow. You're getting closer every day to being there yourself!

If you or anyone else wants the Hummingbird cake recipe, I posted it here: post #8233

Hey @sunflour congrats! You've graduated to a whole new level of BYC-dom...you've masted multi quotes!
clap.gif

Blooie, Minnow would be a cute name for a Silkie, especially a tiddly one. Hope you haven't lost any more. Both my finch babies are now eating well. I may get up in the night to feed them. Apparently if you get them to 4 days old you're in with a good chance. They are 2-3 days old depending on when they hatched.

I worked out I could join the Easter hatch-along as my Button quail eggs are due to hatch this Saturday. I haven't caught their mother off the nest to candle them, but I know there are 6 eggs there. And I'd rather not disturb her any more than I have - yesterday I cleaned the aviary out as the shavings were so wet from all the rain, and bugs were moving in, so I replaced it with straw which shouldn't get as packed down as we have a cyclone headed our way at the present moment. Yay - more rain. It may yet slide past us/change course/dissipate so we shall see what happens.

Teila, you've done so well without your DH. Much better than I would. I know you must miss him terribly. If you are halfway there then it's all down hill from this point on.

Sunflour, you did make me laugh about the nipple! That's a good description and boy does Minnow latch on - I have to ever so gently push him/her off so s/he remembers to breathe!

Ooops, sorry sunflour, may be I should have said milestone not anniversary .. I meant that today was the 5 week mark since he left. Counting weeks etc
wink.png

hide.gif
Ok, then. I'm ahead of your next real anniversary and won't have to worry about missing it.
wink.png
.

But 5 weeks and 5-6 to go.....so that means you are half way there and with luck the next stretch will be a lot easier than the past - no more cyclones
fl.gif

IMO take some time for yourself - really relax, do something that makes you laugh.

Hey @sunflour congrats! You've graduated to a whole new level of BYC-dom...you've masted multi quotes!

Gosh, thanks. Is there a badge for that, LOL.

I have tried it in the past without success, but never saw the instructions show up by letting the cursor sit on those buttons. Maybe that's a new feature or I've just not noticed.
It has been a real mystery and now that one is solved, will move on to solve other great mysteries of the universe
lau.gif
.

Seriously, do you have any other sources for applicants? It seems where you live there aren't a lot of job opportunities and there has to be some better candidates out there.

JaeG - Glad the comment gave you a chuckle. I still think it was simply genius, maybe you should get a Patent on that and get rich
smile.png
.
It surprises me how many folks I come across that have no creativity in solving problems with things they have laying around. I once shocked my employees by doing a temporary fix on a toilet flusher with a Gem clip
big_smile.png
. The were giggling and thought I was crazy until they saw it worked.

Wish you could video little Minnow - I can picture that and smile:) Hope you are getting some sleep - 4:30 feedings again

SUNFLOUR - I'm so PROUD of you!!! Took me a long time to figure that out too! I'd hit that "multi" button and see no response from the stupid computer so I thought it wasn't working. Gee, there should be an "Are you sure you want to quote this post" warning that pops up when you hit it or something so you'd know!!

Halfway there, Teila!! Whoopie!!!

I had this vision of Jae walking into a store and telling the clerk she needs a plastic fork. The clerk looks at her funny and says, "Do you want to buy a whole package?" And Jae replies, "No, just one tine, please."
hu.gif

Yeah, about that Hummingbird cake, Debby. Thanks a heck of a lot for the cake and the recipe. Ken's already been after me to get one done after tasting yours......like I have nothing else to do! I'm going to give the chocolate bunnies to the kids to put in their Easter Baskets. Kendra already loves the sunglasses...told you she would find them and adopt them! And we're going to recycle the bag and use it to take her cath kits and the mat when we take her out with us. Just the right size! So double duty!!

Well, I need to get over and check the rules for the Edible Easter contest. Haven't even started my entry and it closes sometime today. I need to find out what time. Yep, last minute Blooie. We're down to 7 chicks. Every single one of the littlest ones died. Makes me sick to my stomach. Last year after hatching Silkies I ended up with every single one of them being roos. This order was straight run, so with my luck I can add 7 more Silkie roosters. <sigh>

Edited to add: Well, I just looked at the rules....I've got two more days to procrastinate, thank goodness! Doesn't end until the 12! Let's hear it for reprieves!!

Oh boy, you are going to enter...
pop.gif
. I know you work better with some pressure, good luck with your creation.

So sorry about the losses - likely those who have expired had some type of defect and it's really for the best. Straight Run
