The Odyssey/Eros flock

I lot of the heritage breeds are on the critical or endangered list of birds that can disappear forever simply because people are either not keeping them anymore or they are not keeping the breed pure. Definitely do what you can with them. Spread the word on the importance of preservation of the breed too.

For sure. The situation is fairly hard, since there are two main types of chicken keepers. The massive fans of pure breeding, and the ones that are purely in it for either eggs or meat. The ones that keep chickens strictly for the dietary benefit would keep mixed flocks of Tsouloufates. That's how I got one Tsouloufati mix, that was also my first unsuccessful broody. The strict pure breeders, look down on the landrace, as a "fake" that has no reason to be bred. I'm not saying they are something absolutely magical, but they deserve to be bred as much as any other breed and landrace

This is very interesting stuff. I had to go online and read about the Landrace chicken and I found the article below to be quite interesting. Just as you mentioned, in that they develop in response to their environment. (I've always had a huge interest in evolution, especially finding Darwins Finches on the Galopagos Islands, (The Origin of Species), birds that evolved different styles of beaks to adapt to their food sources, just fascinating.) So the Landrace breeds are quite interesting to me. I had no idea some of my favorite gotta have breeds are Landrace!

Yes, their development is something I am very interested in. It is inherently tied to the history of the place, and the chickens themselves. Looking at a landrace is like studying a piece of history. You can see the history on them

You said that perfectly, you can definitely see the history, the antiquity of your environment in the breed. Like a story, evolutional history of your territory all wrapped up in a chicken.

Eloquently put. Studying the history of each breed is an aspect of chicken keeping that often gets overlooked, but I find to be of utmost importance, and interest

Exactly, these heritage breeds have become genetically encoded with the ability to survive in their environment in a very vigorous way, making for a very strong breed. So many breeds have lost all these traits, hence it's important to keep these rare breeds going. Very interesting subject!

I wholeheartedly agree. It is indeed and interesting, and complex subject. Nothing gives you a better understanding of which breed would thrive in which keeping condition, better than studying their history

On the evolution of all creatures, I just find it all fascinating how traits develop and natural selection takes over so they can continue the species. Every environment has such creatures that over the millions of years has changed to fit their surroundings. We humans tend to overlook this stuff in nature, to me it's the structure holding us all together.

I find evolutionary biology nothing short of fascinating, like you. I think many people nowadays can't grasp this concept in depth because they have had close to zero exposure with the natural world

Oh absolutely, we humans have pulled away from our natural environment to the extreme limit. We have disconnected from our world that evolution, most of the sciences, the understanding of where we and other creatures stand in the scope of things, that this subject and other subjects are no longer thought of or understood. Unless one has an interest, it becomes one of those things that becomes lost to our consciousness.
