I only had Cockers and I didn't have to worry about hugging too hard etc. they were not made of glass. They never raced down the stairs trying to trip me. I can't recall any of us ever accidentally tripping over them.

I like big dogs too but, I know I couldn't lift them into the laundry tub to bathe them. Couldn't afford to feed them, etc. A 42" high fence wouldn't keep them inside.

The food bill! Especially considering Ripley is a really picky eater (only fish flavored). If it isn't fish flavored, it won't be consumed. We have to have it shipped to us.

She'll be 2 in October. Yes, she's full bloodhound, although sometimes I swear she's got some kind of shepherd in her since she loves to chase the goats and get them inside the goat haus at night. I attribute that to us getting her at 8 weeks old and me taking her on my chores (which include rounding up the goats) nightly. I am not able to do the chores alone, clearly I need bloodhound help each night.

We had no intentions of getting a dog, let alone a giant bloodhound. However, I "loaned" my godmother some money (I had zero expectation of getting it back) and she bred her dogs and wanted to give us a puppy. I made the mistake of telling BF about it, who wanted the puppy very badly. He left the decision up to me and when I said no, he said that was the wrong decision. We got her the day after Christmas. She was covered in fleas and had 2 burn marks on her ears from a "natural" flea treatment. She weighed 12 lbs and was a good cuddler, but snored a lot. She now weighs over 100 and still snores. And farts. Loudly (each time she sits down). And stinkily.

Hm that’s true, Cockers and spaniels in general are pretty hardy! Forgot about them haha I guess I was thinking of like the real little breeds.

And hm those are all good points!! Although that said we have hoses outside so I could just take them out and bathe them out there. or I could possibly make them jump into the regular tub haha or our shower is huge so I could just walk them in there. But they’re definitely expensive to feed and keep contained, etc.! Although oddly Gator never ate very much for a dog of his size! So that was nice haha usually like 3 cups at most. And he also never would have jumped over a fence of any size if we had one we didn’t have one so we put him on long ropes when he went out, one for the different parts of the yard, but each he could explore/get to most of the yard. Anyway, we had the ropes, but he was so lazy he definitely wouldn’t have jumped a fence

Gator was pretty picky too but thankfully not that picky!! LOL we also rotated brands and/or flavors every month too though so I think that helped ha but there were some he refused to eat!! That always sucked lol

A corn patch IS like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates. Found this amid the Ruby Queen corn harvested for processing today. I guess even veggies embrace diversity.

As for big dogs' appetites, our 5 pups eat through a 50 pound bag of food in 3 weeks by themselves. The two older dogs eat their fair share but a 50 pound bag will last them two months. All are medium sized dogs. We figure they are costing somewhere around 60 dollars every 6 weeks to feed as we are feeding them locally produced food from our MFA.

The way I look at it is that we are pushing 70 now, have no family we want to leave anything to once we are gone so hey, may as well enjoy it. We are down to the three males needing neutering. Ben, the most dominent gets snipped in a little over a week, then Diesel who is turning into a little Hitler with his smaller brother, then finally Varn who has turned into a sweetie and tends to get beat up by his other two brothers. That means, done in November! Hard to believe they are 9+ months old now and just about at their full height.

I have been a Ripley fan since SCG posted the first picture(s) of her. Even Ripley's drool pictures are heart warming.

Peep, even the white corn is bi-colored, so it should be sweet to eat.

I have found that's one of the pros about having only one dog, and small at that. The dog food bill is way down!

The difference between having one and two dogs is negligible. But once you get to three, things get logistically exponentially more difficult. Like, for instance, wrangling them to the vet if you're solo or a duo. DH says it's because two dogs are pets; three are a pack.

It all was! I did a quick saute of the kernels for a luncheon, but folks were picking it out of the pan and nibbling on it raw. May have to make a corn salad....

Farm-to-Table ladies luncheon: The dish pictured with the side of sauteed corn is roasted Delicata squash with a baked egg in the center, topped with San Marzano tomato jam, bacon and parsley. Save for the bacon, everything came from the garden. Delicata is one of those summer/winter squashes that you can eat the skin of. The flesh is kind of like acorn squash but a little more delicate.
