The Old Folks Home

@microchick - were you bitten by the cat? Maybe by a dog is just as bad, but I had a deep cat bite that gave me terrible cellulitis. Glad to hear you’re on antibiotics. I was at the ER that night, but saw my PCP the next day (because the ER doc spent all of 90 seconds on me) and she sent me home from work, lectured me, changed my antibiotics, and eventually hospitalized me.

So take good care of yourself, and don’t be afraid to go back to the doc if you’re not improving.

Sheesh. That was 30+ years ago, and here I am talking about my hospitalizations again! Ugh.
Yeah, cat bite. Stupid cat never bites the dogs, just lays into us when we are trying to break up the fight and then holds it against us for days like we are the instigators of the melee. The cattle dogs being cattle dogs grab by the hind quarters or hair, the same as they do for cows. Just herding instinct on steroids plus they don't differentiate between cows, cats, kids....goats....sheep....other dogs...geesh. Plus, the day we rescued them they were playing tug o war with what was left of a dead wild rabbit. Our local Amish are a bit brain dead about such things and won't change. I'm sure they didn't realize they were setting a behavior in the pups. Other than this they are perfect pets. Smart, affectionate and full of energy.

Yeah, this isn't my first rodeo. If you have pets you are going to get punctured at some point. Have to admit though I've only been bitten once by a dog and that was once again trying to break up a fight between three of them. Those wounds healed fast. Our dermatologist told my husband upon examination of his last injury that cat bites were the worst. Their mouths are cesspools of bacteria and disease. He had a severe cellulitis that I'm sure if they had seen it at its worst they would have slapped him in the hospital.

Being a farm we have antibiotics on hand. Animal or human, they are the same ABTs and we know which is for what malady so we are always prepared.

Thanks for the well wishes. I'm sure in a week I'll be back to normal....I hope only a week.

Is your tetanus shot up to date? Sorry you got hurt! :hugs
Yeah, I think it expires next year in the fall.

@bruceha2000, the main wound was almost a half inch and when it happened I knew he had went in full depth. I had to keep ahold of him though so he wouldn't get loose and get back into the middle of the fray again. At his age we just have to get used to treating him like the old man at the nursing home where I used to work back in IL. The guy was old but sharp as a tack. Also determined to escape not taking into account that the center was at the top of a very steep hill that opened into a major 4 lane street. The old guy made it as far as the hill before the aides caught him just before he went full blast down that hill.

Learned that day that sharp doesn't mean they still don't need protected from themselves and danger, which is the place where the cat is residing now.

Luckily I just can't straighten the middle, ring and little finger on my right hand so I can still type. All is not lost...:yesss:

Truly fortunate, especially for us!

Just herding instinct on steroids plus they don't differentiate between cows, cats, kids....goats....sheep....other dogs...geesh.
Darn good thing they are limiting themselves to creatures that walk on 4 legs!

I forgot the punchline....the old dude was in a wheelchair.....keep getting this mental picture to this day and wondering what speed that wheelchair could have hit going down that hill.:lau

We'd love to find some cows and let the cattle dogs run out their frustrations chewing on cow hocks.

I got bitten by a neighbors cat. She said I just needed to go in and put down food and clean water for him. She said he was used to being home alone. What she didn't say was he HATED IT. As I was trying to slip out the door, he charged me and I put up my hand so he'd stop. You can see I don't know cats. He bit my hand.:rant

Well all wasn't lost - she gave me $ 30 when she got back from vacation. Was about what it cost for a tetanus shot at the the e/r.

If you know dogs, you know how they will respond to different situations. A cat doesn't think first, they are nothing but instinct (teeth and claws.)
