The Old Folks Home

In the house I raise my girls in, there was a good sized piece of wooded land, and a cow pasture. For years, there was this mama opossum, and in the fall when she'd start to wean the one or two babies, she would bring them up to eat the cat food I put out for the outdoor cats on the front porch. Never a problem.

One year, there were these dogs that one of the neighbors had. Vicious things. They began coming up, and killing the cats. During that time, the remaining cats, and mama possum started eating on the back porch. The back yard was fenced, and the mean dogs couldn't get to them back there. BUT, I had a young hound dog back there. He did ok with the cats, but would bark like crazy when mama opossum tried to eat. One evening the dog stood there barking, at the mama, then he got brave. He decided he was going to bite her. When he put his face down to bite her, she took a good nip at his nose. The dog yelped, backed off, and there was never a problem between the two of them again. In the meantime, one of our neighbors warned the other one about his dogs. When that didn't work, they went on his property one night, and he shot them.

Good morning old (and not so old) folks. I discovered recently there is a herd of elk in PA. I had no idea. DH and I went up to the area to do elk peeping the last couple of days. Wish I brought my larger zoom lens but pretty happy with the results. Went for a hike yesterday afternoon in the area. Its further north than us so they have more of the fall colors in the trees. We are still just starting our foliage colors here. Fantastic! When we lived in TN, the guy down the road had a herd of elk. I liked listening to them. Once they broke out and had to be captured!

Are those deer in front of the elk?

The size difference is hilarious... makes it look like a litter of puppies... or a herd of goats.
