The Old Folks Home

Prayers sent, Cap.:hugs

Cars are a necessary evil. The Econoline Van, which I drive the most keeps trashing the window mechanism on the drivers side. Don't know why. Right now I'm driving it with the inside door panel off and a piece of 1X2 holding the window up. (no hillbillies in our family) The new mechanism/motor for the door came late last week. Must have come over from Europe somewhere because it took it forever to get here. Something like three weeks. It'll be nice to be able to get the window to go up and down again....until it trashes the motor again.

How are you doing these days?

Sure enough, under/behind the ramp, a little dug out nest with 16 eggs in it!
I SWEAR I did NOT send 2 of my EEs to your place to teach them that!!!! Saturday night I was looking for Yue, 7 Y/O Ancona who hasn't been going up on the roost for a couple of months now, at close up time. I found a nest of 19! eggs from 2 of the EEs up against the alley wall behind a small piece of plywood. They all passed the float test. The 3 we used Sunday morning did have fairly runny whites.

And, since I'm late to the EE discussion, along with what others said about them not knowing what they are SUPPOSED to do, every one of the 6 I've had (still have 3) laid Large to Jumbo, never Medium once past their first few months and none have EVER gone broody.

Anyway, he sent his daughter, and son-in-law
Blessed indeed! House calls and HONEST to boot!

Had one of the Amish fix that?

Maybe our EEs just have excellent genes. :D

Are yours good winter layers? One of mine used to lay straight through winter and even now she doesn’t take a long break and is the first to start back up

Nope, they have never laid in the winter past their pullet winter. Moult in the fall, no eggs until probably mid to late February.

That makes sense! I think mine is actually similar now but she laid through her first and I think possibly even second winter. And she’s consistently been the last to stop laying and the first to start up again. And a daily layer of large eggs.

She doesn’t molt long usually. She used to start right back up immediately after the molt, now she takes a little bit longer but still very impressive for an EE.

And very impressive compared to her sister who took at least 7 months off, possibly almost a year, and didn’t start until like March this year.

She started molting in August last year and again this year.

But those few months she did lay, she laid daily and laid massive eggs lol

Good morning down right cold here at 9 it was 55 in the house not heating with electric yet lit the fire in 20 minutes there was heat to 65.. all my eggs from my EE from a member not here anymore sad like to get more from her none went broody all large to jumbo none broody but hatched a few via silkie get the chance do it again they are all in molt

How are you doing these days?
Not too bad.
Still doing my neck exercises twice a day. I see the doc and the PT lady tomorrow. I had to quit one exercise because it was causing my neck to hurt worse. I seem to only be able to go about 10 days before the spasms kick in again in my neck and shoulders. The good news is that I recognize when they are starting now and try to do a few quick reps to loosen things up till next time.

How'd the stress test go or is that tomorrow?

My flock master, Twonky is such a wonderful rooster. I don't know what I'm going to do besides hope one of his sons steps up to the plate once he is gone.

Today I tossed a few rotten apples from one of the trees into the run for the chooks. The young roosters kept chasing the juvies away along with my BBR hen and her baby so I went in and chased them, got an apple and cut off a few tidbits for the mamma and baby. They snatched them up and then here came Twonk. I was still holding the apple and he broke off two prime chunks, laid them down for mamma Hope and her baby, Josie then ambled away to check out the next group that was gathered around an apple.

I think every flock has one exceptional rooster as flock master and Twonk is that bird in my flock. Respectful to me, protective of his girls, strong leader to the younger roosters and defender of chicks. Sometimes you just get lucky.

We spent an hour and a half out in the pasture taking down barbed wire. Told DH all that was missing was us wearing cowboy hats with two saddled horses happily munching on grass behind us as we worked. Somehow a 35 horsepower tractor just doesn't cut it as far as ambiance is concerned.
