For 2 days now, I've been getting everything ready to go to Alabama, and pick up 15 freshly hatched, chicks. Yes, if I leave the state, I can get back in. Yes, we think Dd #1's car will make the trip. Yes, Dh can watch the kids, while we make the trip. Yes, we finally found some Hot Hands to keep them warm on the trip back. Yes, the brooder is thoroughly cleaned, and just about all set up.

When Dd #1 went to feed/water the chickens, she began to holler. In the mutt group, there's a newly hatched chick. Every chicken, in all the sections in my coops/runs, is on high alert, and chattering. The section the mutts are in, has 10 hens, and 1 rooster in it. Mama was walking around through them with her baby, and every hen has investigated the chick. They're sort of clustering around mama, and chick, all very alert, and watchful. The rooster checked out the chick too. When he was satisfied, he hopped up on the roost near mama and baby, standing tall proud, and alert. I told mama, and papa what a great job they had done. (I didn't really want any chicks from this group, but Dh and Dd conspired against me). Everything was fine. Dh walked into the coop, and mama hen began growling. I petted her, reassuring her it was ok. She accepted it, but kept growling until he left. She does NOT like him in the coop. He doesn't belong there. When he left, she was fine again. I put a small feeder, and waterer on the ground, and tossed a handful of feed on the ground. She's back on the nest of eggs, hidden in the corner, behind the nest boxes.

I've been fighting rats in the coop. I took a mechanic light out there with a low wattage bulb in it. If they have enough light to see, without it being too bright, they will kill any rats that try to come near. A lot of my rat problem will be solved tomorrow. There is a tree near my coop, and the end of one of the branches has grown, so it touches the roof of my coop. Those stinking rats are running up the tree, out on the branch, then down from the roof, into the coop. Dh got the long handled limb saw, and will trim it back good tomorrow.

I'm still going tomorrow to Alabama, for the other chicks.

Nicely written! It had a beginning, middle and ending that tied into the introduction!

I hope you have a nice trip to Alabama! and that the rats problem will be gone by the time you are home

Have a good trip.

Some states have guards!? :th

Wait. Are you not allowed to go to other states atm?
We have check points coming into and out of the state. Asking if you had any vegitable matter or non permissible item to come in the state. Then there are Border patrol check points into San Diego county... On all the main roads.

So far we are not restricted for travel thank goodness. Because When I want to get Chicks the only place I can get them is in Yuma AZ. Newcastle in other counties. But we get our mail delivered in Los Angeles and the chicks are sent off from there. Unfortunately Los Angeles is one of the Newcastle quarantine zones.
From the CFDA:
Attention: The United States Postal Service (USPS) is not allowing shipments of live birds (all) or hatching/embryonated eggs into or out of zip codes 90000-93599 in California.
There are a few hatcheries in San Diego County and I hope to get some chicks there. Even some exotics like Ayam Cemin and Svart Hona...

So it will be a while... before I can jump into that venture hopefully Newcastle will be under control.
