The Old Folks Home

Getting ready to head to airport. DH is taking a later flight (tomorrow) so we are going to stay in a hotel tonight near the airport instead of trying to drive in this weather tomorrow and hope to make it on time. Would rather drive the almost 3 hours now, which will probably turn out to be closer to 6, and just get it over with. Not looking forward to staying at a hotel but sometimes you just have to suck it up.

sandi (who is not so charmed by snow as she once was)

*edited because I can't spell
Drive safely!

I will keep my two old ones-- they are my first. I promised my old guy he would never be leased out again after the neglectful treatment he received when leased out as a youngster. I had lease him to a teenager whose parents were footing the bill-- I don't think he had a trim for the entire 1+ years he was leased, and they threatened to abandon him when they moved barns. I was deperate to get him back. TUrns out the dad is a doc and a childrens specialist in BOston.

I had a visitor yesterday and that old guy was the first one to meet and greet the visitor-- I wondered if my horse remembered this visitor who was about 13 the last time they saw each other.
Last spring, my husband saw an ad on craigslist from somebody who was interested in leasing horses for a summer lesson program. His thought was that it was a way for me to make some money with the horses that I wasn't using anyway. My reaction was, "Which one do I call about - the one who has foundered and has possible lameness issues, or the one who hates being a lesson horse and will bite and kick at the kids?"

I might consider an on-site lease, but after all the horror stories I have heard over the years, I'm not about to let an animal that I own go to the barn of a person who can't afford to buy their own - especially when you consider the prices of horses these days.

My very first was a mini mule, and if I could only keep one, it would have to be her. Her life before me was evidently not too good, and I feel like I owe her . . . .

bunny, I think that is part of the reason I am hesitating about selling them. The one in jumper training I will be asking a lot for because of her breeding and talent. I figure anyone who can come up with the money is not going to abuse the animal. I know it is no guarantee, but it has a higher chance of being true. The almost 7 year old has some training but will take an experienced rider since she is still green in my opinion. The almost 20 year old is the one I would not sell because I would have to sell her for very little which would probably mean someone who doesn't know how to take care of a horse. All three animals have had a great life so far (both youngsters I owned since they were born and I am only the second owner of the old gal) so it is a hard decision. It is probably a little easier if you are a breeder and selling offspring more often, but I know I will worry if I do sell one.

I don't know, both ways are hard. In the past eight months, I buried the first two horses that I ever raised and trained from birth. I had several others that I had and let go of and I think about them sometimes, but I don't worry about them. I would like to have one of those mini mules or even a donkey, but it will likely not happen.

I know, but now we have about 2 inches! We just had some snow ice cream, my first and it is good! :) DH said he has had it many times and wanted some. My poor cows have ice sickles hanging from them. DH said they have cow hide and they can't feel it :/

Sorry wisher for you loss-- it is very hard. I lost one yesterday due to the fast increase in temps to colic. GOne in just a few hours. Sucks. Really sucks.

I did sell a mare for good money and in the years later a person leasing the mare found me online and emailed me. I wish she hadn't. THe horse was in bad shape from bad training. ANd she was a gem of a horse, a childrens hunter that could clear the fences. SHe should have been kept as a dressage horse. sigh.

We're getting sleet - about 1/2 inch of accumulation so far. Terrific - teensy, tiny icy ball bearings, and I have to drive on them. Pray for me, y'all!
Be careful and sending prayers your way Bunnylady!
