I need some chicken feed expert advice please! I went to a new feed mill and co-op today and was checking out their feed and prices and the man gave me this website for the company he buys his feed from.
Please tell me if you think this would be a good feed for my birds as there is no meat products just vegetables.

FEEDING DIRECTIONS:
5-Star F-R-M ABF All Vegetable Chick Starter Crumbles is a complete and balanced diet for starting chickens from egg-laying breeds. Begin feeding as the only source of feed after hatch to 6 weeks of age, then switch to 5-Star F-R-M ABF All Vegetable Pullet Grower. Always provide plenty of fresh, clean water.
*Note No antibiotics have been added independently to this feed. There may be a detectable residual level in DDGS, which is contained in this feed.
**No meat byproducts have been added to this feed.

This co-op does not have any other customers that buy chicken feed so he would have to buy 5 tons of it to get it delivered to him. Which means I would have to buy and use it all!
So I really need some help here please!
I mix my own feeds

My starter is 23% - 0-6 weeks
Grower is 19% 6-16 weeks
Adults get 15%

at 20% protein you are getting more than you probably need and therefore paying too much. The major ingredient is normally corn. Its cheap but not high in protein. to boost it they normally use a combination od soy and/or fish meal - some "organic non GMO" may use something else but getting the protein higher costs more.

a bag of feed is 50lb
5 tons is 10000lbs
How fast would you fo through 200 bags of feed?

Below is the table I use with the feed components I use - maybe overkill but it may give you some insight

My main stay is rice bran - I pay 12c/lb Soy is 20c/lb FishMeal is 24c/lb Maize is 14c/lb

copra rice bran soy fish meal maize

tnspursfan,

Calm down it will be okay. Yes the catahoula is a herding dog. They are very smart and very trainable. They are not an aggressive dog but they are very busy. They love to be trained as it gives them something to do. Like most herding dogs if you don't give them a job they will find one and you might not like it. I don't think you will have that much trouble with it and Maddy. I actually think that they may get very attached to each other and where you find one you will find the other. If that is the case you will always know where Maddy is and if she is in trouble because the dog will let you know. They are really very nice dogs. Give it a chance and you might find that this pup was really meant for your family.
I whole heartedly agree

we had Border Collies and Blue heelers.

They trained to herd on our birds. I would find them with the geese, turkeys and chooks in a corner of a paddock with the dog squatting in front of them

We had no probs with them eating our birds and they were amazingly bonded to my siblings

I'll be 37 in a couple of months but I was raised by my grandparents b/c my mother was a drug addict and up and left one day when we were young. Story for another day.

Living in Rural NC on a hog farm I remember the bathroom was a late addition onto the back porch. In the winter when it froze we had to use a bucket.

we didn't have locks,
the only heat was one wood stove.
the boards in the floor were far enough apart that Grandma swept the dirt through the cracks.
in the summer we didn't have shoes except for church shoes. Each fall we'd get a new pair for school.
we had a phone but you picked it up and ask the operator to dial who ever you wanted to call.

Even living that poor, living with my grandparents was some of my absolute best memories!
Having everything isnt everything .. . . .is it? :)

Can they be trained to guard the chickens? There was a big hawk eyeballing the run today. I heard my flock sounding the alarm and saw it in the tree line before it flew away. We also get possums, foxes, racoons and coyotes here, though the loud barking of Daisy usually keeps all but the possums out of the yard. Daisy is confined to the house and her own yard.
Dang cute puppy. I was looking at those a few months ago. None up this way other than at the rescues. Lucky you.

Mostly you will need to train the dog to leave the chickens alone. Keep dog on leash til you are comfortable with that understanding. ( I've had dogs chae sheep and it is a nightmare to get undercontrol). My dogs barked at everything they could see. By nature dogs gard their territory.

Wheres Wolfie??, she could answer this.

5 tons is a lot of feed. How many months do you think this would last you??

My grain guy cautions me about bulk deliver ( he does that too) and Mr RHodes has his silos filled and gone in about 3 months as I remember. Grain guy thinks this is too long. ( Grain guy owns the mill)

THe general problem is that once ground, the vitamins start to loose potency. other nutrients don't change.

Can you store it in a cool dry building??

Don't worry about the lack of meat protein. IT is hard to find in feeds now do to laws. You can add tidbits of meat as you can from other sources.

Chicka - What other bird feed does he sell? Can you get turkey starter or game bird starter? Is there a TSC near you? I would be more comfortable feeding a mixture made of a higher protein starter and cut it with scratch or some other low protein feed to get the right percentage, You can use lots of other things to get the required nutrition for your birds. Calf Manna, black oil sunflower seeds, scratch, feed wheat, oats, etc. Just don't skip the trace minerals and vitamins that are added to the starters. I would never agree to buy 5000 lbs of feed without enough stock to eat it in a week or less.

I am not sure how fast I can use the feed but he can store it for us till I buy what I need. We went thru 4-5 bags of feed a week last year and I am nearly doubling my flock.
Thank you for you help and input! I appreciate it so much!

I do not have to buy it all at once but he will expect me to keep buying from him till it is all used up. So he will not be stuck with it.
I can store a couple hundred pounds in my feed room. But not a whole lot more than that. I did read the list of ing. in the store and it is all pure ing. and no GMO's.
Thank you for your help and input! I appreciate it very much.
