The Old Folks Home

I love some alligator tail! I've had rattlesnake, too stringy. Tried frog legs, not a fan. Love all the deer I've tried. Tried both domestic and wild rabbit on the same night, liked domestic better. The wild rabbit was more gamey...go figure! We've been talking about raising rabbits to have a quick, homegrown meat readily available, besides the chicken.

I haven't had alligator, my husband wouldn't take me try it. LOL Same with rattlesnake. Back in Tucson, AZ there was a restaurant that featured rattlesnake and I couldn't get him to take me there. I kept telling him that if they can bite us, I want to bite them. LOL I can remember my mother eating frogs legs and she wouldn't share with us kids. When I grew up and found them in the grocery store, I tried them. YUCK! But I don't know the proper way to prepare them. They seem to relish them on Duck Dynasty. I have never been deer hunting. I think my father didn't think it was a thing for girls to do. Or maybe I never showed enough interest in it. This year I hope to go hunting. We have a bit of land and everyone who lives here can get a deer for free. I can't get my girls to go and my son doesn't want to shoot one but if he goes with us, I don't think it would be illegal to have 3 deer if there are 3 of us. Like I said above, not enough meat on a rabbit but the last ones I had came from the grocery store. Maybe I need to find someone local who raises meat rabbits and give it another try.

I meant you could try to cook the squirrel like a rabbit. Although that would probably have even less meat than a rabbit. I've only eaten domesticated rabbit, and those usually feed two people pretty nicely. There are also some bigger breeds.

Yes, but you have to have more squirrels than you do rabbits so I was thinking there would be more meat. Rabbits are pretty expensive but I was hoping to shoot some squirrels. I just don't know where, there don't seem to be very many right around our house and if there are not many here, then there are probably not many a little further away.

We eat squirrel, gator, and rattlesnake. Cook a squirrel exactly like a pot roast. Same exact seasonings and its done when the back leg pulls off easilly. Rattlesnake is good deep fried. I tasted one of the best meats ever while tailgating at a university of alabama versus florida gator football game...pecan wood smoked alligator. It was fine fine

Quote: 8 at the moment, but we have two roos, so come winter we'll be at 7 max. The roo that we'd like to keep started to show signs of aggression today though, so we might be down to 6 even by then. I'm going to cover the sides of the run over the winter, so they should be okay in there. But I do wish I would have built it a bit bigger. Maybe next time.

Teila - pulling her head back in is probably a self protection device that frizzles developed over eons of time. That way they look like a 'shrubbery' or maybe tumbleweed - depending on where they live - so critters don't notice them.

Smarter than the average chicken, I would think.

Unless someone can provide more information than I could find, I don't think that frizzles have developed over eons of time. The frizzle gene would be a recessive as they do not repel water, nor do they seal heat in for the bird to warm up with. Only humans would develop a freak recessive trait... like roller pigeons that roll across the floor over and over, smacking their heads on the floor as they go... or fainting goats... or any of those other foolish things that people do. Frizzles, are dang cute, I can agree with that but if I had them, I'd be pretty concerned about their ability to stay warm in the winter. Roller pigeons, I won't have. Fainting goats either. Can you imagine fainting goats in the wild? If a predator just looked at them they would faint and become an easy meal.

Yeah, I know, an egg .. ho hum!

While I can understand some thinking this; I am one happy, excited Mum.

This tiny little offering, taken next to a photo of her bantam mum's egg is the first egg for my little bantam girl who I guess I can no longer call my baby girl :)

Not only is it her first egg and probably the smallest ever laid here, it is also the first egg laid by a girl who was hatched and raised here, so kind of extra special.

Very hard day yesterday. Spent most it at the emergency vets. Very long story short. Had an appointment for next week with my regular vet, couldn't get me in sooner. I had found a lump on the side of her head and she was running a low fever. In the morning she put her paws on my chair and looked up at me. I looked into her eyes (definitely know they were fine the day before) and choked a scream, yelled at my DH we are heading for the vet's NOW while he was trying to figure out what just happened I was diving for my going to town pants. One of her eyes was totally clouded over and the other looked "fuzzy". I knew something was very, very wrong.

Several hours and $600 later we had no clear answers what it was but a few of what it wasn't. Could be Blastomycosis or an aggressive Lymphoma. Third possibility is acute Leukemia. Fourth possibility ??????? Vet admits she's stumped, but not for lack of searching for an answer. The Hematology results were bazaar. After the bloodwork and looking at biopsy from the lump under the microscope were inconclusive, Blasto is looking less likely but another biopsy, along with a urine sample, went off to the state vet lab anyway. If nothing else, it will narrow the search.

She was given several different drugs and we were sent home with more while we wait for more results. The old "shotgun" approach until we know what we are fighting. Within hours of coming home both eyes were completely white. My poor little baby girl. I am fighting to be strong for her but my heart is breaking as I hold her. She's just 5 years old.
Please pray. I know, she's just a dog, but no she's not,,,, not to me.

Update. She is happy this morning and doesn't seem to be in any pain. Still has the fever and appears to only be seeing shadows now. I just pray my vet has been doing her research and has some answers for us tomorrow.

"Please pray. I know, she's just a dog, but no she's not,,,, not to me."

I don't believe for one second that the one who hears our prayers is only concerned with humans and will take the time to heal only humans. I've seen too many miracles take place with prayer over beloved animals...

I'll pray for your little doggie, and I know he will hear me.

Aggression toward you or the other rooster? If he's young, I'd give him time to work it out.

I have a buckeye rooster that is just about 1 year old. I had one years before and he was the sweetest tempered guy so I wanted another one. This guy is a pest. I don't like him at all, I'm only keeping him around because I want to cross him with some other birds I have... to get that very small comb and wattle into my yard bird flock.

He'll be ok for a while and then one day, you'll be walking through the pen to feed and he'll square up on you. I've had to chase him around with a stick a few times and he gets the message for a while. Right now he's in a pen by himself... I just had enough of his antics last week and he got "grounded." We'll see what happens.

Towards my better half. Me he respects, but he started trying to dominate Karin today. We'll have to see how his behavior develops the next few days. We don't want to have to worry about him attacking us or the neighbors kids.
