The Old Folks Home

Yea, you can't 'put off' Stumpy and me with snow pics. We would LOVE to see some snow that was deep enough to make snow men or snow Angels and not come away muddy! The area where we live comes to a screeching halt when it snows even an inch. Schools close, businesses close, roads close, and grocery stores sell out of bread, milk, and beer. The power goes out in the rural areas for days on end and we love it! No one loves it more than I do! I have to admit it is aggravating, but I would like to see one 10 inch snow a winter here in the deep south!

THe first snow of every season causes people to drive like they don't know how to drive in snow! Accidents everywhere, and some drivers stay off the roads completely. Hilarious. Sometimes I think chickens are smarter than people!! Well, some people anyways.

So true! It's a big deal here. On the rare occasion that it does snow, I like to get out early and snap a few photos before it melts.

Stumpy, I love the Purple Finches. And that view of the lake is mesmerizing, I could look at that all day!

Snow is rare here, but it's magic when it happens. The last good snow we had was a couple of years ago. This is what it looked like:

It takes big, fluffy, flakes and almost no wind to do that on fence wire.Do you see the broken tree in the background? It's a Red Bay, relative of the Magnolia. Southern trees just can't deal with snow.

As you can see, it was just a few inches, but it was beautiful (and yes, it basically shut the whole town down for a day!)

WHen the heat arrives this afternoon you bet I'll be in here looking at these awesome photos to coooool off!

Bunny Lady-- our trees don't deal well with heavy wet snows or a snow after leaf out. Branches snap off, whole trees pulled over.

I kept a couple maples that were bent over to almost touching the ground, in a big arch. Left for the chickens to perch on-- they have never used it yet !! It will be there when they want it.

Serenity!!!

Me, too! and I've never been there......
x3! Last fall, we were thinking of moving there when we buy our big homestead. DH drove up, but the properties we could afford were not what we envisioned. Now we are probably going with something in the Ozarks.

Gorgeous pictures, everyone! Winter is my favorite season. It's definitely this time of year when the longing begins....

Bunnylady, thanks. I like the photos, especially the one with the ducks

. Speaking of magnolias, we have a type in our yard that only grows near water, or at least that's what I've heard. They have huge leaves and flowers.

Arielle,

I sometimes use a snow photo as my computer wallpaper in the summertime. Here's a spring shot for you:

Depends on where you look . . . and where you want to live. Some areas are shockingly expensive IMO. Much is still rural . . .most is actually. THe paper companies are the largest land owners inland and north. DH used to cruise for a paper company in the summers. Best friend in college lives in Eastport, cross thru a Native American reservation to get to Eastport.

I love to visit.

The properties I wanted with acreage either had a house that was built before my great-great grandparents were born or had all the acreage in a strange location - like the house was right next to other houses but owned all the woods in the back - not really the privacy and usability I was looking for.

Found this place and although it only has 4.4 acres, it's incredibly private and the house while not old has an old farmhouse feel to it and so much room (after years of being in cramped 1 bedroom apartments in the Baltimore-DC area) that I had to get it.

My mom bought me a pressure canner today after tasting my jams and seeing my bread. I wasn't really sure I wanted one, but can't say no to a free one. :)

Those are what my Dad and his family always called "Cowcumber" but I think it is also called Native Magnolia or Wild Magnolia. I LOVE those and they get hugh! Is that lake visable from your home?
