The Old Folks Home

Did somebody leak the information I was driving to Livermore to pick up this silkie?!?!? Still a bit closer than Modesto, though.

Kim, you may remember the time I said I would never get a "poodle of the chicken world.". Silkies. Bah. Oh, who's a cutesy wootsie wittle fluffy silly bird?!?!

I do have a silkie roo though and NO way is he quiet! Since I'm keeping him, it's imperative I divest myself of newly crowing cockerels to stay under my agreed-upon Two Rooster Limit. Of course, I'm really keeping four carefully selected roosters.... One is in the house. Another Never Gonna Get One of THOSE breeds: a LF WCB Polish.

My how things change!

My recommendation for folks who wouldn't possibly want to keep a silkie is to never, ever, EVER see one live, in person in a flock. Photos do not show how freakin' cute they are when actively puttering around in their chinese pantaloons with the rest of the flock.

As a former silkie-hater, I can say now I was wrong.
Chiqita tried to get me hooked on them. She snuck some silkie hatching egg in with Marans and EEs. It was very, Very hard but I gave them away.

There was a sizzle, showgirl and a slikie that hatched....They are now Pets in Redding, CA.

I'm gonna get a girl silkie! I'm gonna get a girl silkie! I pick her up this Saturday. She's already laying, too.

Her name is "Sparkle.". She's all white.

Okay, back to pretending to be a mature woman again.

Congrats. You KNOW we need pictures, right? And if she's laying, why isn't she broody?

x2. And don't EVER see a showgirl in person or you'll have to have at least one of those, too. I "squeed" and I am not a girl that squees. This fits-in-your-hand miniature poof ball is one of my favorite chickens. Granted, she's over a year old and she's never laid an egg...

I liked them because my great grandmother raised them when I was a little girl. Bill laughed at me when I got the first ones, but I had a little black roo that he thought was funny, so a few days before he died I was saying I needed to take some of the roos to the auction, he told me not to get rid of the black one. I have 3 whites now, but I don't spend a lot of time with the birds right now and they're always penned because I have birds that aren't even mine in the yard at all times. Mine can be out eating treats and here come the other ones. 5 roosters and a bunch of hens and they're Games, so although most leave them alone, there's one who thinks he had status in MY yard. I catch him and he's going to the auction.

Awwww. Silkies are the most precious little things. So glad you got one

Guess I deserved that LOL. I have hens and rooster together but have never found anything as pretty as those purple eggs. They are just beautiful
LOL thank you! I love them and trying t get my own little breed going. We'll see how this year goes since I lost my pullets, which I didn't get many of and I had a ton of cockerels. Think pink and blue when you see purple.

Ahhhhhh. Thats really neat.

It's snowing in Tuscaloosa Alabama! Write it down (that never happens!) What you getting out there, Stumpy?
It was 27 for a low in Woodland CA today. It is going to warm up soon, so the lows will be back above freezing for us by the weekend.

We are going to be in the 40's next week! Can't wait. My DH says, that will be sweater weather after what we've been through. Minus, and single digit temps. Cold! My chickens don't seem to mind the teens so much, but when it is only 3 degrees, or -8 .. whew..they are pretty much staying in the coop.
