The Old Folks Home

I was going to post you a fabulous picture of Miss Piggy (well, it was for Bama, too) but BYC seems to think I'm posting things that require censoring.

......... but Miss Piggy is too sexy for BYC (I know, I've seen the photos.)

Quote:
I don't think it will matter, Ron, it's the subject matter, just too provocative.

I apologise to all my friends here for getting caught up in and thus perpetuating the insanity that has occured here over the last few days.

I cant help myself.

We will hit the farm tomorrow. I spent the day with the kids here in Bacolod.

They smell soooooo good.

@Teila , nice to hear it worked.

Oz, you must be on cloud no. 9 right now. Did the kids get their bikes already?

We did some landscaping and planted a plum tree in front of the coop today. Turned out pretty nicely. We built a nice bed for it out of rocks we stole from the neighbor (with permission), and all the soil we used is from either our potato towers or the compost. All we needed to buy was the plum tree itself. I'll post some pictures later, once it's working again.

And I promise to tone down on the politics, it seems to rile people up a bit and upset others. I do hope that no one takes offence if @ChickenCanoe keeps posting updates about the situation in Ferguson though.

It's getting calmer. Last night was the best yet. Only 6 arrested. I think all the FBI and Eric Holder coming to town has calmed things down. People are starting to trust that this won't just get swept under the rug.

@ronott1 I came across this on another thread, Ron, and wondered if this is what I should be doing. Along with taking them out of the incubator for 2 hours on day 8 and spritzing with water until day 18. I'm on day 5 now and just started turning last night. I don't want to screw this up because these are good White plymouth rocks. The SG Dorkings are coming in 5 days.

Take the top off, spritz with clean water and go do chicken chores. When finished, but not more than two hours, check to make sure the eggs are dry and then put the top back on. Do this from day 8 to lockdwn.

There have been studies and this method will increase hatch rate. It makes the chicks hatch better too. I just did this with shipped CCL eggs 7 or 8 fertile eggs hatched a day early.

This was such a nice forum, why tear it up with politics. There are politico forums, where any that are so inclined, may go voice your political views. We all have them, but are wise enough not to voice them here. While we don't adhere strictly to chickens, all out political debates are not appropriate here. The saying goes, "There is a time, and place for everything." This is not the place.

I washed off the poop boards, and turned the dirt in the coops yesterday. I decided to lift up one of the poop boards to adjust it's position. There are usually bug under them, which the chickens enjoy scurrying around and eating. When I lifted the board, a bunch of field mice came running out, and I discovered they had tunnels under there, and even pinkies. Yes, I screamed like a girl as all the mice scurried away! The rooster crowed at me for daring to shatter the silence in his coop, while the rest of the chickens just stood there and watched. I turned the dirt under the poop board, destroying their tunnels. Today, I will remove all poop boards, and leave them out of the coops for awhile. I hope I don't encounter anymore mice. UGH! YUCK! EWWW! BLECH!

I got a spray bottle, and misted all around the coop with a mixture of water, and vanilla extract. It DOES help with mosquitoes. I have used basil for fly control for the past two years.

Ok, can I mist myself with the mixture of water and vanilla extract. Will it work? Basil, I never heard that worked. Just sprinkle it around?
I worked yesterday making my buckets of fermented feed in the sun. Hot, hot, hot. But done and will last for 4-5 days. I have taken my chair out to the coops to be able to sit and watch them in the shade. The littles are still integrating in the rooster coop. Better though. I have a little 6' x 10' space that I let the females out first for 15 min and then the males. It's only 2' high so I have to be out there but they love it. Hoping to get a better run in the next month or so. Next is a hoop coop. I bought a sterilite shelving for a nest box. I'm using the two bottom shelves with a community black coke holder. It's about 20" x 30" and I will velcro a pretty cloth around the front and one side. The come in the other side. They just started laying this week so I'm doing great to find eggs in there.
