I plan to check and candle this evening. The Octagon is actually having a bit of difficult time keeping temperature regulated this time of year. I usually hatch in winter, when unless we lose power or let the stove run out, the temperature doesn't much move. It is easier for it without the day to day fluctuations we've had lately. 66 yesterday, snowing today.

Ok. I hope your Octagon can manage get stable.

All my new bators don't seem to be affected by the air conditioning here. Thank goodness.

It's just the fluctuations from day to day - 40 degree difference between today and yesterday. I'm glad I'm not incubating in the styrobator because the temp would fluctuate a lot more.

I'm getting excited to candle. I think they went in the incubator on Tuesday... so should start to see veining today.

And soon you'll be drowning in chicks again... Our current batch of chicks seems to be the most active one yet. Thank god they're out in the coop and not inside. Roosting at 5 days already, running around crazy. And they're not afraid of the big birds either.

I'm glad mine are bigger birds rather than chicks heading out into the coop. My turkey toms severely damaged a poult that I had to put down last year. Broke its wing, bone sticking out and everything. It had been fine for a few days and then in 20 seconds...

Ouch... we decided to try au natural this time. Last time I put up a divider for the first 4 weeks, but this time the chicks are just growing up among the existing flock. Seems to be the best way, compared to what I've tried. Integrating can be such a pain otherwise. Those 4 young cockerels we've got in there are still afraid of the older birds, even though they're starting to get bigger than them. And they grew up sharing the coop with just a wire fence in between. I think this set of chicks will be much more hard headed.

I am also excited to see if you find nice veining!
