The Old Folks Home

I need to get a good pic of my 5 week olds trying to roost under mama.

It cracks me up.

Cynthia it did rain while we were down there. In fact on Friday, when we did the Kanarra Falls hike, it rained then it hailed (enough to actually start accumulating on the ground) and then it snowed all on the way back to the car. We were prepared for everything but the snow. I was wearing shorts  By the time we got back to the car I was almost hypothermic. Saturday was SCG's turn to get that cold. We decided (foolishly some would say ;)) to hike the narrows where the Virgin river is the "path". We didn't know that you could rent wet suits. Wish we had known that before the hike. I want to do that hike again some day with the right equipment and on a better weather day (I recommend it be over 70 degrees before you do this hike).

The hurricane winds took out the windows and blew the roof off the house flooded and by the time Feema and the Red Cross got out there we had sat for 3 weeks with no power or roof and the house was covered in mold. We came back to AL. It was devastating. My youngest son has heart problems and trouble breathing. I could not wake my son up for two days and I had to call the fire dept to bring me ice to pack him in. My car ran out of gas at walmart and sat for weeks I could not have gotten him to the hospital any way the roads were all closed. It was a mess for everyone.

Wow, that's a story!!!

Here's a picture of my chicks from you (and 3 leghorns from the store)

As you can see, weirdly, almost everyone is feathering out completely white except that one buckeye that was a darker colored chick (middle front) and one turkey that is a nice tan colored (back middle). Everyone else is WHITE!!! I don't understand.
Also one of my leghorn sexed females is a boy.

Such lovely pictures, it is almost like I was there.

I will NOT be doing the narrows again. Unless you take me through the Zion tunnel again. And I have a wetsuit. And its at least 70.

Quote: OMGosh SCG I am now wondering if we got some Chantecler eggs mixed in with the Buckeye's? I have no idea! SCG I have early onset Alzheimer's and I really thought I sent you Buckeye and Bourbon Red and Sweetgrass. Sweetgrass will have a dark stripe down their backs. Those chicks look like the Chantecler chicks???
I did take them all to Raz the same day and they were all in the pens next to each other when I collected the eggs. Maybe that is it? So far though the light Bourbon Reds are females and the dark ones are Jake's. I guess we will just have to wait and see. I'm so sorry!

It's okay, please don't worry about it. Regardless of type, I will have some layers and some meaties. I'm all good.

Quote: Well at least the Chantecler and Buckeye are large meat birds. I will tell ya though, Chris Mccary emailed me and was shocked that I gave up the Buckeye.
I thought I had got rid of all of them. Then I found 3 cockerels in a brooder! I guess I am loosing my mind. lol But I got rid of all the brooder babies so life will get easier.

I just read something I didn't know in a ebay ad for beltsville white turkeys. They said they are 'parthenogenesis' 30% of the eggs will hatch unfertilized, no tom, and hatch all males. That's crazy! They are selling fertile eggs, they just mentioned that.
