The Old Folks Home

Some people see spiritual things in food. On the last batch of cheesecakes that I pulled from the oven I saw a chicken vent dead center.

I made BF eat it so I didn't have to stare at it. When I served it to him he knew right away why. He said it was delicious.

Crust:
4 c all purpose flour
1 and 3/4 cup shortening (butter flavored crisco or lard)
3 tablespoons white sugar
2 teaspoons salt (I use kosher)
1 egg (I prefer duck)
1/2 cup cold water

I combine them in a food processor. If combining by hand add all ingredients except egg and water and smoosh together, then add the egg/water.

This makes about 2 crusts with lattice top or 1 full set of upper and lower crust plus one lower crust.

If you have difficulty rolling it out add a bit more flour and make sure it's really cold. I use either parchment paper or a plastic bendable cutting board to roll out onto, which I can then flip on top of the pie plate and tease off.

It freezes very well. I usually make a double batch and freeze them. Take them out a day in advance and put in fridge. I also can apple pie filling so I can make an apple pie really fast if needed.

Thank you so much for sharing your recipe with me. I have tried several that I found online and just cannot get a good flaky crust. I lost my recipe years ago.
I don't make pies very often but I do love a good pie crust.

I'll bet your BF loved the cheese cake. :)

Vehve and Alaskan I don't know how y'all manage with it being dark for so long. I would have a major depression going on.

OK that was a short respite from fabric posts.

Whew!

Here's what I finished up this weekend.

Wall hangings for my mother and sister (cardinals are supposed to be the spirit of deceased loved ones. While I don't believe that, they'll eat it up, and if not it's at least cheery)

And a hexagon table topper for my pumpkin pie display tomorrow.

Lovely SCG!

I saved those recipes, thank you both.

On the daylight subject, the less daylight hours seems to be bothering me more this year than ever. I guess its the older I get, I just want to sleep through it. Another week and we'll start back the other direction though, so I'm glad.

Can't remember who asked if I was a quilter too, and yes, I am. Haven't done anything for over a year, but I think I'll get on something after the first of the year. I hope. I did download the birds and berries pattern from Craftsy. :)

The birds and berries wasn't that hard. My suggestion though... take it or leave it. If you don't already have and use a bias tape maker, skip that step and just do applique for the stems.

I do fusible applique and did it to quarter inch.
