The Old Folks Home

To be more accurate, I don't sweat much. When others are wringing wet, I will have beads of sweat across my top lip and across the tip of my nose. If it's really hot, I will sweat around my hairline above my forehead and along my temples. That's it. I never sweat through my clothes, anywhere, not even my pits. I get hot.... then I get hotter....... then I really get hotter and hotter until I have to go inside. I have never passed out, but I've gotten close, and I have gotten migraines from getting too hot and it doesn't have to be "near heatstroke." I guess it goes without saying that I don't get much done outdoors in Alabama, in the summer.

Wisher, I'll sweat for both of us. I can't handle hot weather (anything above mid 70's). I feel like the sun is beating down on me and I am melting. It's in the 80's today. We've been going up and down (like to 40's) for weeks on end and then rain, and rain, and weather man says rain for next 5 days, 3 could be heavy thunderstorms. I have to leave the fleece parka, plastic raincoat, and spring jacket out - and switch them around.

Congrats Alaskan on your hatch!

Cute little fluffy butts running around are always so cute.

I sweat.... buckets.... Probably why I handle the heat well. I also get beet red when I get hot.

DS used to react very badly to the slightest heat - sweat crazily, beet red etc -- this was all when he was little so it also made him VERY cranky -- really fun when you live in N.C. Thankfully it seems to be something he has grown out of for the most part as he is much more tolerant of heat now.

Key to heat is not undress but dress properly.... Cotton and loose fitting is best. Including underwear.... and just like in the chicken coop air circulation.... Ventilation.... get the humidity out....

I am an Open the door and window and shut the screen kind of gal.... especially with a swamp cooler. You open the window or door in the room you want cool then fire it up. I am good to 110 degrees even.... though I lay low during that kind of heat.

But at 70 degrees I need a sweater or light jacket if I am not doing any work of any kind.

Agreed - and I miss living in a dry heat area where a swamp cooler works. I can deal with heat, it's the darn humidity that kicks my butt! SO looking forward to moving back to a drier climate!
Well... The eggs are now at work!

I have 5 bantam white leghorns out. Cutest little bright yellow chicks.

5 is almost 1/4 of the eggs that were shipped, and that is a just fine number.

Most of my standard black Ameraucanas are out, 6. Such super fat chicks, giant poofy things compared to leghorn chicks.

Two of the standard rose comb dark brown Leghorn (shipped eggs from fancy breeder) are out, and one is a super chunky fellow. None of the standard rose comb white leghorns (same fancy breeder) are out yet, but there are lots of pips.

Of my homegrown bantam wheaten ameraucana only 3 are out so far, the rest of those eggs were being very thoroughly sat on... I am hopping they weren't goobered too much that they won't hatch. I did a quick removal of egg shells to help out with the space issue.

Dang cute little things... Newly hatched chicks.
Woo Hoo - so glad they got their little fuzzy butts in gear!

After sweating all afternoon yesterday while reclining, I decided it would be a good thing to hook up the swamp cooler, since we're due mid 80s again today. Would rather not run up the electric and water bill, but hate being hot and sweaty even more. And it's substantially cheaper than central AC. It's on low right now and doing exactly what it's supposed to be doing, assisted by fans to move the air around

I'm guessing TX wouldn't work out so well for me after all... KY will be much cooler.

Where about in KY are you going? I can't say it is any nicer here (we are in "kentuckiana") than it was in N.C. When we first moved out here I had commented to a neighbor how I had thought the climate would be different (better) - and he said, "Yeah, this summer has been odd - it's NEVER like this here" --- he lied, it is EXACTLY like that EVERY summer......hot and HUMID!

Not sure exactly where in KY I'll end up... depends on where I can find land that meets my needs, in quantity/quality, and within the budget. The place I'm most interested in right now is in Franklin County, right on the border with Shelby county. But there are other places far east and far south of that that are also possibilities.

I think I overdid it.

I put down the black wrap over my garden soil. Drug the fence out of storage and set it up around the garden to keep my critters out as much as possible. Planted the cold crops in the garden (greens [some from alabama!], broccoli, more bulb onions, celery, carrots, peas)

Then I cleaned the goat and duck houses out. Transplanted my pepper plants into bigger containers, hauled some dirt into the duck enclosure to cover up some of the poop/mud. Cleaned up the basement and got the feed bags disassembled and ready to go to the dump for recycling. Stacked the approximately half cord of wood that I split last weekend. Came in and cleaned the kitchen really good then vacuumed the whole house. Filled the bird feeders. Then I started my warmer seeds (melons, cukes, squash).

And now I think I'm just going to go die on the couch.

The bugs are out in almost full bug-force right now. I ate a couple black flies (by accident) and got a couple bugs in my other facial orifices.

Luckily tomorrow is supposed to be nasty rainy and cold. I'm looking forward to not feeling guilt for ignoring the rest of my outdoor chores.
