1) Loss leader. Note that the eggs and milk are at the back of the store. You have to walk past a LOT of stuff to get to the "deals" and a LOT of stuff to get to the register.
2) Possible overproduction, sell cheap or throw it out. The stores might actually be making money (or not losing much) at $0.50/dozen.
3) OLD eggs, get them out before the expiration date on the carton, like "$$ off" stickers on a package of meat that has a "sell by" of 'today'.
Could be good for people who like to blow out eggs and decorate them for sale as Christmas ornaments. Get them cheap now and have 6 months to make them.
