The Old Folks Home

I had a rough day. Woke up to a headache (not uncommon) and DH#1 and DS#3 had to go to Bessemer (about an hour away) for the boy to play a baseball game. So everyone skipped church. When they got home, DS#3 found out that one of his good friends (also 15) was in a rollover accident on the way to church this morning. The friend was wearing his seatbelt, but his older brother (17) who was driving, was not. He was ejected and killed. I have cried and hurt all day for that family. Next, my niece called to tell me my sister is back in ICU. She has been in and out of the hospital for the better part of a year and we were really starting to believe she was past the critical stage. Today, her BP was hovering around 90/45....not good. To top it off, when I went to see my Dad (94,) he didn't know me, but kept asking where I was. That's not the first time that's happened, but I was already feeling emotionally weak and it got to me. The one bright point is that we worked on the garden entry gate/pergola until after dark. I was so happy with the way it has turned out so far. I will post a couple of pics.....

What a heart breaking day!

Is that the same son that had a friend die last year?

I just got off the phone with my parents; it seems that my mother fell this morning and broke her arm. Prayers are appreciated.

I really really really hate this editor......tap the holes to the right depth and they wont leak. I just lost a paragraph trying to explain how to install nipples correctly using tapped holes. Run the tap to the depth which allows the nipple to become tight in the thread just as the gasket makes contact and they will always be dry and replaceable. If you do what the hype says and just screw them in it simply mashes the threads and leaves room for imperfect fit. Been working with this kind of stuff all my life, trust me :)
I thought about tapping the threads, (I have tap and die sets) It's plastic, five gallon bucket might get two threads, 15 gallon container might get the full depth, how good is it going to be? epoxy glue it, jb weld it even, I have no leaks other than the dripping from the nipples themselves when they drink, might not last forever, but good for now. And I don't haul water no more.

X2, I was thinking the same, wasn't it you wisher that already dealt with this recently?

WRT drilling and tapping. you can drill and tap sixteen gauge for a number six screw. you get about one and a half threads... enough to hold sheet metal .

Typically two to three threads is enough. Because the fastening is NOT for strenght only for affixing the materials together and making a water tight seal.

NPT theads are designed to form an interference fit.... because of the taper....

I have used trilobular screws for thread forming in plastic. Too bad they havent thought of that in creating the water nipplebase. then all you would have to do is drill a pilot hole and the trilobular screw will form its own threads without creating Chips... it simply deforms the metal or plastic into threads.

first number is the diameter the second number is the amouth of threads per inch....
In case someone didnt know that...

6-32 screw is .138 diamter with 32 threads per inch.... the threads are spaced at .03125 apart or 1/32... 2 threads will form through sixteen gauge material again sixteen gauge is approximately 1/16 thick...

I guarantee you a bucket is thicker than 1/16 of an inch 1/8 npt would have threads spaced 27 per inch which would be spaced about .037 apart two threads would need .074 thick....

but here is the dilema... the taper... The tap would best be only threades so far into the material... making the threads smaller in diameter thatn the final seat point of the nipple base. so when you screw it in to seat it you will deform threads. Causeing even an irregular hole to be forced to seal.

and yep Using a drill press I have drilled holes that werent round into aluminum due to a poorly sharpened or dull drill bit. I used to sharpen my own bits when I worked in the machine shop.

sorry am blabbering.

Thanks, Ron, Deb, Les, and Joe. It was my middle son (DS#2, the one who loves all things medieval) that lost his friend in a wreck last October. He was also the driver in the rollover that happened not long ago. He and his younger brother, as well as another friend were all buckled in and none were hurt too badly, no broken bones, no stitches. I really appreciate all the thoughts and especially the prayers, but it was just a bad day, I'll be alright. It takes more than that to do me in.

. I'm so sorry to hear about your son's friend's brother - such a tragic loss.

I'd just been thinking about your sister, and hoping that "no news is good news," as they say; sorry to hear about her recent setback.

Love the gate - I bet you will too, when you get it installed.

Good Monday morning everyone, hoping at least most of you had a great Father's Day.

Bunnylady- How's your mom? prayers of course!

So sorry I am a bit late, busy weekend for "dad'.

Wisher - No words for your day, just a huge hug for you and a small prayer for your son. what a horrible, heartbreaking week he has ahead of him.

Deb (and everyone else in the heat) - Please stay safe!!! I thought it was horrible yesterday with our 90o.
How in the world do you keep your animals alive in that kind of heat? Or yourselves???

I'm wishing everyone a great first "Official" day of summer!!!

Be safe all my peeps!
