The Old Folks Home

So, Perchie.Girl, you are a caregiver for your Grandma then. Bless you is all I can say. I lived with my parents until I was 51. Health problems for me at first then it was their health problems/aging that kept tuned me into their care giver. Things went full circle. Both had dementia-long sad story but I know what you are going through first handed. I was their caregiver for almost 20 years.

People would ask me for advice concernign caring for their own aged family members and I would tell them that it was the most rewarding thing they could do next to raising their own children but like raising children it was the most demanding and sometimes heart breaking endeavor they would ever undertake.

Penny1960 what a treat idea! You are close at hand yet have your own place.

Deb, just an idea but how about using plastic totes to help you organize things in your room. Consider a sit down with Grammy with another family member and petition her for things you need if she wants you to stay with her that will make both of your lives easier.

Wish I could give you a hug

Take care of the caregiver. If you get hurt you are both in trouble.

I live in Rhode Island and have been saying for the past three years I'm going to get chickens....well two months ago I finally did it. I called Murry McMurry and ordered 25 day old brown egg layers. ( I grew up with chickens) I ordered them to arrive two weeks ago...and walaaah they came. They will be three weeks on Tuesday and I have fallen head over for them! My plan is to get 50 more in the spring and also a couple Nubian Goats...I want a donkey too but I think that might just push the family over the edge. But we will see

! I let 8 of my girls out yesterday to roam around...I have a 4x4x4 brooder that is inside of a carport (shelter Logic 15x10x8) it works really well keeping the drafts away from the brooder. I built it in no time from something I remember being assisted to build as a child. I'm still working on my coop design as I need to get a building permit from the town so I hope to acquire that by the end of the week. The building inspector isn't lady friendly so he is a little more picky when we go to the office. So I will have all plans and designs ready for him so I can build next weekend. the picture is of the girls after I closed up last night through a vent ...lol

. I just love watching them, I even have a dlynk wifi camera in the brooder so I can see them anytime on my phone...I know it's sad I'm addicted.

Careful! we are all shameless enablers on this thread!!!
I'm putting a new camera in my coop this morning so I can keep track of them at night/early morning.
Hello, my name is Vicki and, yes, I am a Crazy Chicken Lady.

(still morning here, I'm one time zone to your west, at least till next weekend)
What cameras are you putting up? Still getting the hang of that technology even tho I am a certified geek.

I think I am one up on you with the greenhouse thing tho. I have let my girls have free run of my greenhouse in winter for several years but took it further this summer. I, with help of the DH, completely enclosed the area between the coop and greenhouse, cut two popholes in the panels, one so they can go streight from the coop to the greenhouse w/o leaving cover and the other so they can go in and out directly from the run. I removed my shelving and moved in their favorite bench instead and it now completely belongs to them. They love dustbathing where the floor bricks once were and hanging out on their bench when the weather is bad. Now that we are turning cold they can often be found sunbathing in there as well.

You must post more pics of what you are doing (I love stealing ideas

Quote: Not a dog trainer here but I was raised with a dad that would grab the dog by the scruff of the neck and literally drop kick it out the back door. Even as a kid I knew that was not an acceptable way to train a dog.

I limited rough house playing with acceptible toy objects. Not Sox Not shoes but Balls and Rubber bones tied ropes and actual dog toys. Actual contact with teeth was met by a growl or a yip on my part and all play ceased.

I have to admitt though the last puppy I raised was back when I was in my twenties. But my dogs have always slept with me if they chose to. Usually the first part of the night or when It got very cold in the room. My Boston would burrow down under the covers and sleep behind my back.

My choice of dog also played into their eventual good citizenship. I have had two Aussie crosses one Boston Terrier cross one Greyhound one Dachshund cross and in the beginning a standard poodle (moms dog).

The only one that ever bit me was the Dachshund. I was five he was a pupppy I was teasing him and he bit me on the lip. Mom told me it was my fault. that was the end of that.

Food aggression is something I never dealt with. But then again Once i fed I didnt feel the need to mess with the dog. Then when I had my own household I free fed. My Greyhound was a very timid eater. You couldnt watch him eat and he would only take a few bites of kibble in his mouth then go lay down on his bed to crunch them up. Came from being raised in a four by four cage.

@perchie.girl That is what I was leading to in the loud ouch
found it more effective to treat as the momma dog would
it works well for all breeds.
