The Old Folks Home

Everyone's been awfully quiet, whatcha been up to?

Cute chick! Did you give it ride on the train or just pose it there?
Your Christmas village is beautiful.
Is that red barn in the background plastic, top opens and plays the theme from the TV show "Green Acres"? I had one gifted to me when we moved out here that looks just like it.

Just trying to stay warm here.

We had -12 on the barn thermometer at 7:30 Monday morning with about 4 inches of new snow blowing around from Saturday/Sunday. The high on Sunday didn't make it out of the negatives. I kept the flock in the coop Sunday and Monday. The wind is howling from the south this morning and high temps are suppose to be in the 30s this week. The flock will be happy to be back out....once some of the snow melts. They will go out where the paths are shoveled but have no interest in walking in snow that is more than a dusting.

I hope everyone is staying safe and warm.

I opened the pop door for mine this morning. Temps are up in the 20s today. Sun's out.

They just craned their necks, looked outside at the snow and ice and went back to eating breakfast. Silly little prima donas. Think I'll go out then and dump a load of leaves in the coop. That always clears the place out of chickens. They hate that sound and the sudden appearance of all those leaves out of thin air.

what a little doll SCG are they easier to sex ? Are you going to keep any?

Nope turkens are no easier to sex. Hatched 20, hopefully half are boys for freezer camp. The one chick that had a "wry" neck has mostly good hours, now. I wasn't home all day to syringe feed it and watch it so ...

Been trying not to freeze, and getting stuff ready for our little mini vacation right after Christmas. We're going to the Medieval Times in Maryland and going to Assateague to maybe see some wild ponies.

I love the pony swim! I'm originally from Maryland. We bought a wild pony once.

Negative 13 here this morning, I feel you. The chick just posed, the train would be too scary if it were to move. It's loud. The houses are all porcelain - part of some village set and a couple different brands. The platform has little lights punched through the plywood to the underside and then wired for the houses to sit over. I have a bunch of houses that never make the cut for display and I should just get rid of them.

I actually had a few hens and cockerels venture outside. They stayed up close to the building. What was funny was when I went out to close the pop door one cockerel from my Feb hatch was still outside and had ventured out onto the ice. Watching a rooster trying to run on ice is almost as hilarious as feeding peanut butter to a dog.

I did a final post sub zero check on the flock. One cockerel with the smallest comb of the bunch had some black showing on the very tips of his comb. Don't know what goes with that. He's my cockerel who just isn't developing right. I've noticed that he has some trouble with his feet, hanging on to the roost board and such so maybe his lifespan is going to be shortened. Everyone else came through with flying colors.
I think Mother Nature is just trying to suck up to us now. I just looked at the forecast and they are predicting 53 degrees here on Christmas day. And RAIN!

So much for a white Christmas here this year.

At least today it got around freezing so we emerged from the house like two bears sticking our heads out of their dens. I have a project post Christmas to build a closet in my utility room. The room was built on when we retired so it has been a work in progress. I was able to slip slid out and drag wood in. Have I mentioned that I hate ice?

Superchemicalgirl I love your chick 'Rockin around the Christmas tree' even if the train is standing still.

Scg your bunny quilt is so pretty! I love the quilting designs you did.
Is your juki a long arm?

I ordered a Westalee 6 pc free motion ruler set. I am hoping I can use my embroidery foot with them.
Cause I sure don't want to pay 60. bucks for a presser foot. lol

I don't know much about the Westalee but usually embroidery foot = free motion foot
