The Old Folks Home

No sound of birds singing and declaring their territories, no spring peeper frogs singing their brains out. No crickets or bugs raising a ruckus.......just winter cold and silence.....well except for our psychotic roosters, that is.

Gaaaaagh! I miss spring all ready!!
yep, me too! (but then, I am always grumpy :hu )

We get so many birds up here in the summer ... then they all leave!!!!

We get left with all raptors known to man  including crows and ravens. For song birds it is mostly just 3...chickadees, pine siskins, and juncos.

I like the sound the cickadees make...but wow does it get monotonous when that is almost all you hear.

The sandhill cranes left last week (or was it Monday?) Often they leave in lots of small flocks...this year they ALL LEFT TOGETHER!!! Hundreds and hundreds all together...

....

..

and now gone. :hit

@Cynthia12, I'm so glad to hear that you have connected with a doctor that is listening to you and trying to help you. Hope they get to the bottom of your symptoms.

We had a rainy start to the day here. Needed the rain. Don't need the mud so I concentrated on doing more fall cleaning.

We have two ponds on our property, streams and a major creek on one boundary but what I really like is that there is a small lagoon behind the barn. It doesn't hold water as well as it used to-I hope to get a liner to drop into it someday-but it holds enough that in the spring the sound of toads and frogs is deafening. I love it. We also have an abundance of Skink lizards around the house. Every now and again one will sneak inside and I'll find it sitting near the deck door sunning itself with one of the cats watching it with less than honorable intentions. They are truly beautiful little reptiles with their pinstriped bodies and cobalt blue tails.

Sigh. Makes me sad that fall is bearing down upon us. Even though it was near 90 today, I see where next week the temp is only in the 60s.

Enjoy the frog sounds. Won't be long before those of us who have winter experience our first sub freezing nights. We will go to bed to silence outside and wake up to silence. No sound of birds singing and declaring their territories, no spring peeper frogs singing their brains out. No crickets or bugs raising a ruckus.......just winter cold and silence.....well except for our psychotic roosters, that is.

Did you know that pigs can help make ponds more water proof? That is part of the reason we got them, to help our pond in TN hold water.

We used to see those cranes in FL a lot. They raise babies there.

Are they white? Oh...I see they're not. All the white cranes stopped in our pasture at a pond today. I was disposing of a rooster and a skunk (rooster broke it's neck, skunk was in the barn) and on my way back there were all these beautiful cranes with the black tipped wings! :love

And then a flock of Canadian geese landed in the water on the opposite side.:clap I was very lucky to catch all that. Of course I didn't have my phone, so I couldn't take a picture. :barnie

@CapricornFarm. Really? Pigs make a pond hold water better?

Our lagoon needed a good cleaning. When we had a drought several years back, DH cleaned it out for me. Old tires, tree stumps, metal buckets, you name it. It's leaked ever since. All that crap was probably holding the water in.

So how do pigs accomplish that? Mucking about, causing the bottom to be stirred up and resettle?

I have heard that...but for whatever reason always find that odd. :hu

That some fly all of the way to Alaska to breed.. and some stay in Florida.

Do y'alls look the same? rusty color with a red cap?

My avatar is a photo I took of a crane at my house.

Stomping the mud with their feet, and probably some poo may get mixed in as well. Rolling around in the mud. But yeah, it seems to work.

I found the frog video and I trimmed it down to 10 seconds. lol
I hear that every spring, I think every frog for miles uses our pond to lay eggs, chickens love them mixed with the duck weed and tadpoles

Anyone read the news article about duck dongs?
http://www.popsci.com/duck-penis-social-pressure

I have had ducks for years and had no idea they grew their members seasonally. I knew that they had very... unencumbered sex life.
Way back 'Bama' posted a article and pics.... On Argentine lake ducks...
:lau

many men will be jealous :yesss::oops:
:lau

I LOVE brand new clean coops!!!! :ya

See... that is the entire problem. ..that they mention antlers...which we all know FALL OFF.

It would be cool though, to collect them and make crafts out of them.. .. ....like those Irish walking sticks made out of bull scrotums.
It seems like any 'part' is available now for dog treats, 'bully sticks'....
