Coops I'd say, special coops, cold cold weather coops. Always comes up here at some point, people worried about the cold.

great haul. but yeah, root crops do so much better when thinned.

chiogga are my favorite beet. yummy

great quote
I had every intention of thinning and replanting and expanding the crop even had rows ready but time got away and weeds grew like crazy. I'll let you know how they taste as soon as I try one. I grew a row of regular beets also but only ended up with a small grocery bag of golf ball size one's, rest I'm going to just till under, birds have plenty to eat.
Can you grow corn up there?
You should check out 'Painted Mountain' flour corn, it's been bred from many varieties of indian corn for a short cold season.
Couple I'm going to try that I can find is Seneca red stalker, pretty cool completely red stalks and husks, multicolored corn, and Iroquois/Mohawk round nose white flour corn that has really big fat cobs. I'd like to get a hold of some Tuscarora white flour corn, really super long cobs but can't find seeds, looks like they're hoarding them, selling fire roasted corn meal is all I can find.
Another I might try, 'Ha-Go-Wa' Seneca Hominy or White Flint Corn, supposedly if you plant in May they tassel in July....
saying goes here, corn needs to be knee high by the fourth of July to get anything out of it.

Yaknow... Every time I see a post from @Beer can , my eye is drawn to the movement of that (ugly :duc:oops: ) chicken. The repeat action (& appearance) brings to mind zombies, then I go to thinking of a limping chicken... and think about Rooster Cogburn. No controlling my thoughts sometimes. Just thought I'd share. ;)
:lau:lau:lau:lau
They are the most awesomest chickens ever!
Besides, I can't get a gif to work here anymore. I've tried many times with a gif of my white giant rooster, no go though.
Order a box of naked neck chicks, they are the cutest, I thought they were super ugly also until I actually had them. Biggest bonus, well of course easy plucking, but they don't have any 'hair' no hair to singe off, and super tasty, lay great also,:D

Glad someone likes them. I am staying with polish and Speckled Sussex.

I don't know why I keep buying from Burgess. Honestly I bought 5 fruit cocktail trees from them and none of them were more than one fruit variety! Makes me mad. They do offer a one year guarantee but it takes 3-4 years to see what it will produce!
I bought some grape vines from them and I am very disappointed in those also 1 out of 4 is alive! I won't spend any more of my money with them. Just tired of getting burned after 6 years of trying.
I have a bunch of trees from them, some have died, some have survived, not much growth from them last few yrs... though I haven't had much luck with any from many other sources.
I've heard Stark trees are pretty good, haven't tried them myself, I'm broke from spending $$$ on not so good.
Our blueberry bushes are growing bonkers though.

Can you grow corn up there?

not at my house. At the lower elevations you can grow corn, if you plant them in a greenhouse or put them in a garden walled with plastic.

I am at a high elevation...so even short season tomatoes in the greenhouse are a gamble.

What type of soil do you have? Do you add anything to the soil when you plant?
