The Old Folks Home

When I was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier John F Kennedy, they would often have dignitaries onboard overseas, and of course that was the perfect excuse for an "air show" to impress them. This would sometimes include live ordnance displays as well... cannon and 500 lb bomb drops.

On one show a couple of F-14s Tomcats came by for a close flyby supersonic. At sea level the humidity is high so you could see the cone of noise fanning out all around behind them as they came, but heard absolutely nothing. When they went by, the boom was so loud most folks on the flight deck ended up on their posteriors and the entire ship shook in a long wave from stern to bow mirroring the boom as it traveled the length of the ship. I understand how that knocked snipers out of trees in Nam, and could easily blow out eardrums and rupture stuff if done too close. No injuries on the show I described. just dirty uniforms.

We occasionally experience a phenomenon know as Seneca Guns. Nobody is quite sure what it is; the military bases insist that they aren't flying supersonic or blowing things up. Evidently, there is some record of this occurring even before there were planes that could exceed the speed of sound. Sometimes you can feel as well as hear the boom, but seismographs don't usually record anything significant. Usually it sounds like the source of the sound is over the ocean, but not always.

the town I am next to has a long airstrip....

because of that the military that is stationed north of Anchorage often fly down here and do touch and go landings on our strip for practice.

Sometimes we get interesting super big covered in camo aircraft looping over that airstrip maybe 10 times before they head back north.

for R and R here in town

Haven't I heard your town described as "a little drinking town with a fishing problem?" That should about cover "R and R" for a lot of them, I shouldn't wonder.

We sometimes get a very large jet that is blue on the bottom, and white on top, playing touch and go here.

okay back from taking the kid to SS office getting some nonsense they sent also went to the kitchen store looking at a new stand mixer.. I have a 30's vintage sunbeam mixmaster I have used ever since I was a kid it is bogging down starting to do any bread or cakes Was looking at kitchen aid 350.00 minimum the smaller ones are under powered.. We looked at a hamilton beach stand mixer cheap looks like thing would bend if used.... gave up went to Wally Sunbeam mixmaster 350 50.00 on sale the kitchen aid where 275 watt so bought another sunbeam mixmaster

yep.... and the bar people are often.... uh .... friendly ;)

Good buy, Penny.

I discovered something weird today. I have mouse traps set around the outside of the coop and today I discovered that I had caught a field sparrow. I've never had that happen before but the silly thing was definitely going after the bait. That in itself is weird because for bait I usually use thin wire and secure a dog kibble to the lever and then smear peanut butter on the kibble. The peanut butter was dried up and non existent but the bird was after the kibble.

I felt kinda sorta sad that it killed a sparrow but I would have felt worse if it had been a song bird.
