The Old Folks Home

Ok, I never updated to Windows 10 on this computer, even tho I was eligible. I will delay installing it, until I absolutely have to have it. Dh was, and still is upset at me about it. All he can say is his computer is so much faster because of 10. I'm not sure it's really so much faster. He does not have the hardware/software I have. I've seen all the times he's been in the middle of something, or wanted to shut down, and couldn't because of updates. I've also seen when the updates fail, and mess his computer up for a day or two until they update with a fix. I hope they come out with a better version than 10, before I have to upgrade. Honestly, it would be better if they did 2 versions. One for PC, and one for phones/tablets. I don't like app based software at all.

:rant I hate Fricken windows. It decides to just go ahead and shut me down and update any damned time it pleases... Then I'll try to start the computer and have to sit and wait while it does updates. I just got a blue screen of death and an apology that my system has encountered an error and it's collecting information to send off and will be back shortly.:mad::mad::mad: They keep making the crap more complex, and charging more for it, and it's just one screw up after another as they try to "fix" the previous screw ups.

Sometimes I just want to scream... Can't afford to shoot the damned machine. :he

OK, rant done... Now, does anyone here happen to know how to shut off updates completely? Used to be able to but that's no longer an obvious option.
There may be a reason I use a Mac ;)

I just updated the OS to High Sierra. Took a couple of hours given the many Gig that had to be downloaded at 15 Mbps (if I'm lucky), cost nothing. I leave a ton of windows open on 9 virtual desktops and reboot maybe once a month or so. Of course I don't need any apps that require Windows® or I'm sure my situation would be like yours.

Having retired over 4 years ago (really that long ago??) and not having touched Windows® since I walked out the door the last time, I can't help with your auto update question. Sorry.

It depends on what OS you have. XP has not been patched for years and is a disaster waiting to happen. windows 7 is at end of life and will be just as bad soon. Windows 8 is not as good as windows 10.

There is a very important patch for all OS versions of windows that came out yesterday. It is a processor bug in intel processors. All computer will need to be patched, ie: Windows, mac, unix......You name it!

We have had several computers that had problems with the high sierra update. Macs are not immune to problems and there is quite a bit of malware out there. Apple is currently in the process of killing there so called low cost computers too. iMac desktops have not been updated in years and the macbook air has old tech in it too. I purchased a 13 inch macbook pro with 3 years of apple care and an adapter....you have to have adapters now...Cost was $2300.00. Equivalent Dell 13 xps 2in1(touch screen flips to a tablet) was under $1700 with 4 years of warranty.

Macs do not have touch screens!

Much more expensive too.

Love those old westerns.
It is fun watching them. Get to see some now very famous people when they weren't. Ran across Shelley Fabares in one of the later Annie episodes, I think she was 12 then. I didn't recognized her even after going back to the video. Not real surprising, not many people look like even their young adult selves at that age.

A couple from Maverick - Adam West, Clint Eastwood. Didn't recognize them either, went back to the video after I spotted the names in the credits and said "Yeah, I guess it IS him".

Dogs with floppy ears often have problems with yeast infections. They can also as stated get ear mites. If she was as heavily infested with fleas then mites would be the first thing I would check for. Look for caked, tar like exudate in the creases of the inside of her ears and ear canals. The ears will also smell funky for want of a better word. Mites have to be treated with ear drops you can get from the vet and the ears gently cleaned with a paper towel over the tip of your finger.

Yeast infection with ill the inside of their ears looking the same as they do with mites. There will be black gunk in the creases of the inside of the ear in the ear canal only the ears will smell yeasty. Once again ear drops from vet and regular cleansing to prevent recurrence.

If none of those conditions then treat for dry skin. Add some Omega oil to her diet and see if that doesn't help the problem. But with her scratching behind her ear I'm more of the opinion that she has something going on in the ear canal that is irritating her.

Yep, got a floppy eared dog and had them in the past so I'm speaking from experience.

All true but then I have no use for a touch screen so no big loss there ;)

And they keep pulling hardware out but the price stays up. My 15" Pro was new in 2013, has no CD/DVD drive and no ethernet port. And their power cords do not have plug in parts so when the thin cable that connects the transformer to computer goes, you have to buy EVERYTHING for nearly $100 when all you really need is a wire. Mine has a fair bit of "strain relief" tape on it up near the magnetic connector.

Haven't had any malware problems, hopefully I will continue to be lucky.
Dare I ask what MS is charging for OS upgrades now? That could bring the relative cost of a Mac down a bit ;)

OS 10 has been free. When it rolled out it was almost impossible to not upgrade to it which is funny.

We will have to see what is charged for the next OS but I suspect it will be free again. Windows 10 had a major upgrade in the Fall. It was called the Fall update. Quite original.

Touch screen is very nice and being able to go into tablet mode can be helpful for using on your lap. With the touch screen, you can navigate like a phone.
