I've done that with chicken wire. Problem with my darling birds is that they will fly up against the fence and over the top of the L. Found one stuck in the chain link once. DH and I had to cut it out with bolt cutters and then repair the hole.I always run hardware cloth along the bottom of the kennel panels to keep coons from reaching in and young chickens getting out. I make an L shape out of the HC, bury a foot of it, the other foot is bent up and wired in place.
Bright they ain't.
I tried chicken wire, deer netting (they get tangled up in it) thought about a cattle prod but decided that was a bit overkill so I opted for a 3X4 pen until they get some bulk to them.
I had one bantam cross hen last summer who figured out how to escape the netted run. She would get up on the tarp that I had put up, found a gap in the netting and out she went. I'd find her happily scratching around in the orchard. She'd see me coming towards her and race back to the run, fly up onto the net, find her gap and zip back inside.
I finally wound up clipping her wings. Every time I chased her back to the coop I would find her sitting innocently on one of the roost bars.
@perchie.girl, so glad that your first day went well. Get a lot of rest. Extra sleep. Many people don't realize that the human body repairs itself when we sleep. Don't let yourself get fatigued. This is one of those times in your life where you need to pamper yourself and be pampered. Drink lots of water or tea with lemon. Lemon water helps your body detox. I learned that while battling Lyme disease. Most of all, just take care of yourself. We all worry about you here at the home.
